Why does this diversity thing exist?

Hi community, Wanted to know why MNCs give priority to hire girls over deserving folks? Got multiple calls and messages from juniors both from college and others that companies are hiring in the ratio of 8 girls to 1 boy.

Is there any specific thing that the companies gain by this?

Really saddened by this current scenario, first this reservation scenario, and now this diversity shit.

Seems like it is a curse to be born as a General Male in this country.

Multiple factors could contribute to the perception that MNCs favor hiring female candidates over male ones in a ratio of 8:1.

Firstly, MNCs increasingly recognize the importance of promoting diversity and inclusion in their workforce, particularly among historically marginalized groups such as women

Companies strive to create a more inclusive environment, believing that doing so enhances creativity, innovation, and productivity

Secondly, MNCs face pressure from shareholders, investors, consumers, and regulatory bodies to demonstrate progress toward greater gender parity in leadership roles and throughout their organizational structures For instance, the European Commission introduced measures aimed at increasing the representation of women in non-executive board positions of listed companies Thirdly, MNCs seek to avoid reputational damage caused by accusations of gender inequality and discrimination They aim to attract top talent, retain employees, and appeal to a broader consumer base by demonstrating their commitment to gender equity Fourthly, MNCs might leverage affirmative action policies to redress historical imbalances in gender representation These policies aim to counteract past discrimination and facilitate the entry of qualified women into traditionally male-dominated fields and industries Lastly, MNCs may benefit from the unique skills and perspectives that women bring to the table, recognizing that gender diversity contributes positively to team performance and problem-solving abilities

But I dont think that just to fulfill these criteria, these companies need to reject those deserving folks who actually worked hard to get there.

Totally disagree..it has nothing to do with innovation, or productivity. Simple reason is you can pay less, they won't ask for hikes like men do, they will not pester for promotion. Plus it pays to be on the good books of woke liberals. The few women who ask for better hikes and promotion will leave once you ask them to work hard like men.

By being born as a male and in a general category, you carry privilege that you end up being accustomed to, and therefore oblivious of its existence. Sure, others will get opportunities ahead of you – however, it is a step towards their acceptance in society that is governed by upper-caste people to this day (and no, the common argument against this with anecdotal evidence of personal examples of rich SC/STs doesn't work – most people under the reserved categories are poor and bear low socioeconomic status, even in urban areas and cities. Just go read a social science book.)

In other words, let me give you a two-line explainer on how "diversity" helps: it gives people and the circles they belong in a larger view on things. Instead of sticking to the same old thing, you're able to see different sides of people, culture, and life.

Aaah, all of it sounds nice and good until you see all the injustice happening with you. Why not give everyone the same opportunities and let the deserving ones win the race

Because some groups get a headstart in life. Being born a male is one of them, being born into "upper caste" is another one.

Women stick longer to an employer than men, so attrition costs are lower. A minimum Gender ratio in the workforce is needed to avoid male groupthink.

The market that these MNCs serve is 50% women, right. Esp for FMCGs, ECom, Textiles etc, where purchase decisions are mostly women. A friend in Myntra once said that 90% of their customers and value of sales is from women. So it is a no brainer for these firms.

So hire more women in marketing, what is the logic of hiring an 8:1 ratio in favour of women in SDE roles. For fashion and e-commerce startups anyways it is extremely difficult to get into marketing roles as a guy!!

Assume the guys and girls being hired are same level of competence and experience.

Would you rather work in a place with more guys or a balanced gender ratio?

Most likely your response will be latter because most people don't like sausage fests. But number of women in engineering and stem is less overall.

Hence, diversity hiring.

It’s pr. Most jobs at MNCs are fake jobs anyway and don’t really add any value. Hiring women shows they are pro equity, pro inclusion, and score brownie points with investors and customers.

The downsides of not doing it are bad pr, rags like nyt or wapo writing hit pieces on you etc.

Why the left/dems try to force it: they promoted education loans for shitty degrees mostly chosen by women. Like gender studies, psychology, etc. now if these women dont find jobs w salary to pay off the loans, they will blame left. Only sectors which flourished in last 30-40 years were merit based. Now that is gone from tech, next sector would be merit based too. Certainly not tech.

PS i know ai is hot, but that requires serious understanding of base maths involved. Women are likely gonna be talking about ethics and pick up those roles.
