There are essentially four parties in the startup economy:

1. The Consumer
2. The Enabler(read, Startup)
3. The Service Provider
4. The Investor

Now let's look at Game Theory motivations:

1. The Indian Consumer wants to minimise money spent per unit value extracted, the Western Consumer wants to maximise value extracted per unit money spent. (There's a massive difference.)

2. The Startup depending on the stage wants to maximise User Growth and Free Cash Flows.

3. The Service provider wants to maximise financial incentives.

4. The Investor is wants to maximise the XIRR of their fund. For this they need to reach a multibagger liquidity event.

Now let's look at what happens when:

1. The Consumer gets f'ed over: 

The startup attains pricing power through deep competitive moats allowing for monopolisation. They can jack up the prices to ensure nice FCF, greater rewards for Service Providers and great returns to their investors. (Think, Uber can charge anything to you now)

2. The Startup gets f'ed over: 

The users get bang for their buck, the service providers get good incentives, the investors push for higher growth but unfortunately the startup does not have enough capital to service their Cost of Operations through their unit economics, so they will either run out of cash or investor patience. Either ways, they are doomed. (Think every legit startup that failed)

3. The Service Provider get f'ed over: 

This is the likeliest scenario as they have the least power in this dynamic. Rewards will be reduced over time or made harder to achieve. They have no option because they got no option for sustenance. (Think any on-demand service providing app)

4. The investor gets f'ed over: 

Now imagine there is a startup that can balance the act very well. They have a service that users are willing to pay a margin on. They pay their service providers fairly and have decent unit economics. Now, the investor will do halla about destruction of shareholder value from little growth. (Is this the case with BluSmart?)

Maybe that's why building in India is tough.

Ola.  
 I doubt there’s any startup which comes even close in terms of Ola’s toxicity.

Will ONDC kill Swiggy, Zomato?

Lately, I’ve been skipping the whole Swiggy and Zomato thing and just heading out to eat instead. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the convenience of ordering in—I’ve definitely had my fair share of lazy nights where it’s been a lifesaver. But honestly, it’s starting to feel like a rip-off.

Prices are insane. I get that I’m paying for convenience, but come on—why am I paying almost 1.5x for the same meal after discounts? I’ll scroll through, add a few things to the cart, and suddenly it’s this inflated bill that makes me wonder if I’m secretly ordering for two people.

And the food? It’s just better when you have it fresh. Take California Burrito, for example. There’s something about eating it hot at the store that just hits different. You lose that magic when it’s been sitting in a delivery bag for 30 minutes. The freshness, the crunch—it all just fades. (@BertMueller I had this epiphany when I was at your Indiranagar store to redeem my CBGV50♥️)

Then there’s the over-ordering thing. We’ve all been there — trying to hit that minimum cart value for free delivery. So, you end up adding extra sides or desserts you didn’t even want in the first place. When you dine out, you eat exactly what you want, no forced add-ons.

Plus, heading out for a meal is a mini escape. You walk, you get out of the house, and it’s a lot more fun than sitting in your shorts waiting for the doorbell. Even the simple act of being out in the world adds something to the experience.

So yeah, I’ve been choosing dining out over delivery more and more. Better food, better value, and you avoid that weird guilt from spending too much on a cold meal.

Just wondering if you have to pick one app / platform, which one would it be?

2030: which app / product from today you would be using?

VC funding based on revenue multiples and profit (😂😂😂) multiples is soon going to be obsolete. 

Common sense says company's valuation should be summation of yearly profits it can generate till the company exists... 

So if reliance has profit of 8 billion $ , market estimates that it's valuation should be around 25x multiple of its profit that is to say that if reliance keeps on generating same amount of profit for year on year, it will not exist after 25 years.

Now tell me, what shelf live does these VC funded startup have?

I honestly don't see all these tom dick and Harry mobile based and web based startups existing by end of this decade thanks to AI revolution.

People are still oblivion to what AI will do to white collar jobs 



Just out of curiosity, is there any single VC funded Indian startup in last 10-15 years which is immensely profitable ? 

Or for that matter any global giants like Amazon, Uber, Airbnb etc. which has turned profitable in Indian territory?

Lately there's a lot of negativity in general with layoffs, funding winter etc. PM as a function is one of the roles that's faced the brunt of it.

So this post is just to share our appreciation towards any product based out of India that we used/using daily to just create a bit of positivity in this environment.

Let me start with
1) Porter - Had to shift recently. Wonderful experience  managing the whole process through the app.
2) Urbanclap - Seemless process from booking a house cleaning service till the final rating and closure of request.
3) Yulu - Was stranded in a metro station with no Auto or bike taxis accepting my ride of 2 km. This came in as a savior with the app guiding a first time user to use a bike without breaking sweat.

Swiggy losing market share big time , it seems that they are cutting down services in many cities and delivery agents started moving zomato etc. it seems started leverage load sharing with third party agents, causing attrition in Swiggy delivery agents.

Now imagine, we did not have Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Zepto, Dunzo (its pretty much there)
What would your next bet be?
Well 
1. You have some of your local grocery stores who would deliver for you, but it might take a bit of time 1-2 hrs etc. and you need to build a relation, and only some stores do that
2. Restaurants need to have delivery available who if anyone remembers, it was a pain to coordinate, sometimes they dont do beyond 3 kms. You will have to go on your own. Which will also cost you money. Restaurant deliveries usually have a delivery fee, plus the cost of food. There is still a lot of coordination involved to get what you want. Brochures, phone number etc. 
3. Having a full time person who will do all of these for you, Building tends to have someone who also delivers ( like a chotu or someone )

So lets take the cost of 3 for now if you needed full time
1. Monthly cost - ~ Rs. 10,000 - 15,000 if you needed full time
2. What are you spending on swiggy etc?
 1. No of times you are ordering: lets say twice a day
  1. 2 * 30 * 20 = Rs. 1200
  2. Lets say total amount you are paying is 10000 in amount
  3. Some folks might even argue that you restaurenters are charging 30% extra. ( lets say 30% on 10,000 ). 
  4. So lets factor in 3000 Rs more, so we have total sum, 4200 now.
  5. Time saved = 20 * 15 minutes = 5 hrs a month

So we saw three choices
You can do things on your own
5 hrs of your own time ( which does not cover your cost to move around, so if anyone does not have a vehicle, they have to either walk more, or pay for auto etc )
Spending on convenience Rs. 4200 
Spending if you had a chotu - Rs.10,000. This is debatable, you can argue, this person can also will end up cleaning and doing 3-4 other things.

Some will also say restaurants mark to and sell. My request to you is, even with all the markup how much extra are you paying. And then compare to your alternatives before them.

This is based on an analysis of 24 K reviews on iPhone & Android phones between Jan to Nov 2023 conducted by Clootrack. The results though look a lot skewed as 
Zomato outperforms Swiggy by 3-4X in every parameter, How do you look at these results, Do you agree with this analysis?

Is this an effect of Public Listing?

Feels like bad data analysis by inc 42 team. Or clooktrack. Not all reviews mention each of these parameters and hence how this has been weighted needs to be clarified. Also how the f is food quality on zomato 3x Better than Swiggy?? Both are platforms and should ideally be nearest in this.

Let's ignore what's wrong with startups, keep this an optimistic thread. Which startups make you excited about their future? 
The ones that have cracked product, GTM, model, or something else.

Hello everyone, We started a project to help the urban population to access real-time important notifications to make smart decisions each day and........ (something the world can't ignore it, but learn.)

Imagine this, you have access to FM radio, just as a police officer, all time in your hand and you could say anything to the entire Bangalore but only people, whom that information is relevant, will hear you instantly. 

Now, imagine everyone has the same superpower of FM radio. And, FM radio and system has ethic code doesn't let you share bad/harmful/hurtful.... All relevant information in sync with all people in the city.

Sorry, this is all I could share for now, There are more on other aspects delivering great uses but I can't. Now, throw me some questions about this. 

Is this a want or need? - Finding a single room @5K in HSR layout. Or, vehicles are towed from regular road side parking space😅. Or, searching for a CTO around🤗. (if everyone willing to join as CTO will get notified instantly from this single post on grapevine, it would be magic, right?)🤯
