IPL unsuprisingly makes bulk of its revenue from broadcasting rights

Jio paid almost 5000 Cr for digital streaming rights of IPL - I wonder if they actually make actual money from any of this, or is the whole thing just written off as a marketing spend?

They definitely make some monies from advertising. Plus as they are the data providers, monetising infra can be another opportunity for them.

Oh true, advertising revenue would be a big share. But not sure know if the additional data would really be a needle mover

Jio spending 5000 Cr on IPL rights? That's a misdirected investment. They could've pumped that into improving their network coverage. Chalo, let's not worry about Ambani's wallet. Did they consider investing in rural digital infrastructure instead?

Jio Cinema $ 1B opportunity

Just monetize IPL and get recurring $1B as revenue.

Why ain't they doing this, I understand ad based profit but why not paid subscription? 😕

Like hotstar did this earlier successfully.

Disney+Hotstar went from the OTT platform to topple Netflix and taking a huge chunk of the market share to losing IPL...
