AMA - 6 years in PM + 5 years Analytics
Try to avoid asking questions which can doxx me on LinkedIn (that's where I post a little)
See if you can focus on asking questions around principles & not masala stories
Problem with masala stories is that you'll learn the wrong things from my narratives
This will be fun I think
Talking product sense with Ridhi
9 min AI interview5 questions

Could you tell us YOY % salary growth and what made you achieve that?

I rode 2 waves, analytics & PM
Am skilled at interviews and negotiations, akin to a seasoned salesperson.
I am relentless even when I fail at a lot of interviews. I just don't give up.
I have learnt to enjoy interview games.
Unable to disclose specific company details. The progress noted within the same company is marked by a salary increase. Each time a company was switched, it's presented as a new row.
Career Progression (with Annual Salaries in LPA):
Company 1: 3 LPA
Company 2: 5.5 LPA
Company 3: Started at 5.5 LPA, progressed to 8 LPA
Company 4: 13 LPA
Company 5: Started at 16.5 LPA, progressed to 24 LPA
Moved abroad
Returned to India Received multiple job offers Successfully negotiated a strong salary for the Indian market Company 7: 54 LPA
Company 8: Started at 48 LPA, progressed to 67 LPA
I think the trick is to think of yourself as a one person company & be ready for non-linear revenue patterns
Notice how I was able to take salary cuts / move at same salary for long term play (read better job prospects in terms of money)
Many people can't take such trade-offs
That's made a lot of difference in my game play as compared to peers from similar backgrounds

Appreciate your openness. One concern I have does, changing companies too frequently impacts your leadership opportunity down the line? 8 companies in (11-12years), is this the only way to grow?

Thanks for doing this.
From your comment earlier, you have had a very good salary trajectory.
At this point, what keeps you going and motivated going forward?
For somebody early in their career, how can they have sustained happiness/motivation to do well?

I don't know
As I said, my career happened to me
My salary is decent, it's enough, it's probably lesser than a lot of people I know in engineering side with my level of sales talent
So please don't think of me as an outlier
I think money we will make in tech, the bigger issue is having good health (physical and mental)
If there's one thing I can suggest: Focus on building muscles - physical as well as mental
through workouts , stretch, food habits, meditation, affirmations, healthy sex life, everything
enjoy your body & hone it
it's a beautiful tool

What are basic things to keep in mind one who willing to get into Analytics, My interest is to learn Power bi and Sql only.

I don't operate by interest
I work to pay my bills while keeping work life balance in tact and being ethical
I'd probably learn to professionaly dance 10 years from now if that's a decent way to make money
Am just a businessman

Since i am pretty new mentioned as interest understood your answer.!!

A lot of folks here are thinking that am amuldotexe on twitter
It's ironical that you'll compare me with him
I have worked with him in Gojek briefly before he left. He was thoroughly average as a PM.
I think he should just move on to a developer role.
He is one of those irritating voices on twitter who unnecessarily discourages PMs because of his own biases about the field .
I think he should just move on to a developer role & spare us his cynical takes on product management

Hey i am placed as an associate data scientist at tredence analytics Should I move further in analytics or try for backend?

Given that you’ve been in multiple companies/ roles/ sector, which combo do you like the best?
Like Analytics-Gaming or PM-Logistics?

Can you tell me something about negotiations
I am currently having 12 as fixd 14.8 as ctc, got a new offer at 18 fixed and 19 ctc. Wanna increase it, can you suggest what related pointers I can use? (3 yoe)

How do you personally look at the PM role? (in terms of how much of a value add it can add in an organisation - given theres been lots of debate here recently 😂)

It's a General Management role that's niche
All niche GM roles suffer a similar fate & have similar advantages and disadvantages
All such top of pyramid roles will be a headache in one way or the other
they also can be good value add or a hindrance in many good teams, depends on how the PM fits the context

PM equivalent to Genman, wow 😂

-
For someone who took a downgraded product role to stay afloat in this market, what would be your suggestion in terms of career correction for such a person.( ex-Microsoft, YOE- 4, joined new place in March which is not tech)
-
how much and how long does product in ex FAANG help in one’s career( is it short lived till next switch or will it help long term in each career switch).

Product managemer?

PM job search is tougher simply because for every 100 new positions in the industry only 10 are PMs
Even worse at SPM director and beyond
Which means branding will get you your interview shortlist
So please focus on being in companies with good brand-names
Your recent brandname is super important in shortlisting
