To folks who can solve LC Hards

What did it take to get to that point? I'm reasonably comfortable with mediums but hard problems feel like a few notches above in difficulty. Should I find the equivalent rating of mediums on codeforces and work from there? Or is it better to keep reading LC hard solutions until something clicks?

I did competitive programming back in highschool. Nothing world class, but reached Master on codeforces (2100ish rating) and solved around 500 problems on CF. Now when I try leetcode,most of the problems (including LC hards) are like easy version of some problem I did before.I guess if you get serious about cp you can get to this level, although it's probably not optimal strategy.

I'll add that often times the question might require specific domain knowledge about the problem. So unless you've had past experience solving that specific type of problem there might be some assumed knowledge. There are some LC Hards that even after looking at several solutions and YT videos I still do not see how I would even come close to deriving anything near the correct answer. Like I could understand the algorithm/pattern that they use, but a lot of work is done before the actual coding starts.

I think it depends as LC hards can be hard for multiple reasons. I feel like, most of the time, they're hard because there are difficult edge cases to account for.Take problems like Alien Dictionary or Word Search II. Even when you understand the problem and what the ideal solution is, it can be tricky to code as accounting for edge cases is non-trivial.In other cases, the problem could have multiple solutions, but to get the most optimal, it may require knowing a "math trick" or a lot of practice to recognize the pattern and the different approaches you could use.There are many problems that initially look like knapsack problems and can be solved using a DP approach, but that's actually the slower approach and you could solve it faster with a priority queue or something like that. Course Schedule III i think is an example of this.But in the case of an interview, it can be "good enough" to know one solution even if it isn't the most optimal

A lot of the problems build on top of each other. If you have already solved the easy and medium difficulty for a line of problems, the hard might come naturally. Just keep solving problems. You benefit more from the ones you solve yourself first before looking up the optimal solution.Having said that, there are problems that you will most likely not just come up with the solution. There are algorithms that were invented long ago and are taught in CS courses. Even some easy ones, say bubble sort, you would most likely not come up with them by your own. You need to do some research for those. See the comment, find what algorithm people are recommending, look it up and learn it

A new strategy I have been trying is to look at LC hard questions. Try to think of the solution. Most of the time I can't, so I look up a few solutions and study it until I understand the intuition. Then, I move on to other questions. Then I circle back to the same questions at least a few weeks later. I've found that the time gap lets me forget the code in the solution but I still remember the intuition and I can still solve it. This causes me to start seeing the patterns slowly over time

While it sounds good in theory I do think it's not optimal like u said. The lower level divisions for beginners are not your typical LC questions you'll see at all (number theory, puzzles, etc).Sounds good in theory but there's better ways as far as interview prep.I do still enjoy competitive programming though. Scratches the gaming/ puzzle itch I have.

Confused about how to proceed in life

I’m a college grad from IIT in CSE. I haven’t done any competitive coding or any proper coding during my college days for that matter. I have lost confidence in myself for some reason. I had taken up a business job but left it in a few months because I thought I could do better. I want to do competitive coding but as soon as I open my laptop, anxiety kicks in. I need guidance on how to proceed and what recourses should I use. I don’t want to waste my degree as I feel I can do better than my previous job. Please help me on fighting my demons.

For how many of leetcode medium/hard problems were you able to figure out a solution on your own without watching a YouTube video or reading an article on some site?

Does LeetCoders Give you FOMO

I was recently scrolling through linkedin as a regular day to find my daily dose of depression And Suddenly I saw a profile of x Person who started his engineering in July 2023 has 500+ LC Problems solved a CI/CD pipeline set up project and What not I was so shocked to see at what level the competition has raised a first year guy who has just entered the stream has started all this I am a graduate and barely knew all this back then This X person has 4 starts in CodeChef and Some ratings in CF If this person and I are competing for the same job I felt I will be trashed to bins And I see the Leetcode guys 500 Solved Rating this that just in 1st and 2nd year of college I was terrified and impressed at the same time Are these next generation too impulsive to over skill them for a job ? What are your thoughts?

Any DSA solvers? First time solving DSA and preparing myself to switch to better product based companies for higher package. My question is: When I solve LeetCode, I am able to understand the question, come up with initial approach too but without looking into solution or explanation I am unable to solve it completely!😢 while watching a Youtube videos I am perfectly able to understand and solve the problem but when I solve a problem alone(without any resource) or live solve in mock interviews, I am stuck.. Anyone's gone thru the same phase, how to uplift myself from here? TIA

"Interviews are hard in that they have absolutely nothing to do with your day-to-day job. If I were to go through the interviews again right now I'd make a massive fool of myself. I'd say it's basically common knowledge that prior to making any hops, you've got to take at least a month or two to grind leetcode problems so that you're back in that head space where you can solve pointless problems with high efficiency. Interviews are also hard because, if you end up with the personality type which views interviews as a chance to show how much more clever they are than everyone, then you've already failed. Their ego is tied to their "high bar" and impossible question set, and you're just fodder for them to show off that "high personal bar" during the de-brief."

Got a call from a Google recruiter, have onsite interviews in 30 days

I needed some help in coming up with a study plan to specifically train for Google's interview process. I currently have 4yoe, so I think the interviews will be for SDE2 role. There will be 3 DSA rounds, 1 Googleyness, and 1 Leadership round. I already have experience in DSA and have solved most of Neetcode 150 (except DP, Bit Manipulation, and some hard problems). If any of you have given Google (or any FAANG) interview before, I would love to get some guidance on how to prepare in 30 days. I already know most of the common algorithms like DFS, BFS, Sliding window, Binary search, etc so I won't have to start from scratch. Also, the recruiter mentioned that I will have only 45 mins to solve two questions: mostly 1 hard and 1 medium. So I basically have around 20 mins per problem, which I feel is very difficult to solve a Leetcode Hard problem unless you have seen it before. Did I misunderstand the recruiter? Are there any tips on how to get good at this?
