Buying a new mac vs second hand mac?
I am planning to get a personal laptop, and I want to go for mac this time. I am from dev background, so I am looking for atleast 16GB of RAM with 256/512GB SSD. But I am not sure if it's worth to go for a new M2 or settle for 2019/20 Intel pro's
Any suggestions viners?
Newer M2 are best for devs.
Go for 32gb and above pls. I'm telling from experience you will need it.
No. of cores is never a bottle neck, heck even 1 core is fine, softwares can run on 1 os thread.
But in reality you will be running many gui, tui, processes, thus more RAM.
Imagine this to run a fullstack app you need to run ther at the same time - 1/2/4 Java servicess 1 MySQL instance 1 redis server 1 solr server 1 Android emulator for the android app
- iOS emulator for the iOS apl
1 minikube kubernetes cluster
Multiple tabs on chrome,
might need to record screen at the same time so OBS You will need to run tests.
Etc etc.
Even if you don't code in Java.
NEVEr buy 256gb I said NEVER !!!
In the Mac world , the thumb rule is always buy the latest and greatest. So go for M2 . Memory 16gb should be suffice unless you are planning to many applications in parallel. There is a day and night performance difference in intel mac and M2 Mac. I have been using Mac for more than 15 years now . Have M1 Mac for personal use and office provided M2 Mac if that helps.
Just imagine running docker along with the above list 😂
Get m2 or M1 pro older Intel isn't worth it
