Does CGPA really matter that much? I'd love to hear some personal stories and perspectives on this. It would be really helpful for a struggling student like me.

It does buddy. In my college days, there was a minimum cgpa criteria of 7.00 while for top tech companies it was 9.00
Without a proper cgpa, it's very very difficult to get on-campus placements. I had seen a few of my friends who regretted their 3rd and 4th Years for low cgpa losing a proper job.
