Going to be a manager for the first time
Hey guys, i am going to be a manager for the first time in a company that i have been working at for 3 years and I have people joining me from monday.. any tips for being a good manager?
- Just be receptive to their thoughts, understand their povs.
- Help them understand their role and your expectations from them clearly.
- Direct manager plays a huge role in someone’s POV about the organisation, set some biweekly or monthly one on ones to understand/tackle problems they are facing. use the same meeting to communicate your expectations from them.
- One thing that is often neglected is, making sure your team members have a visibility outside your team as well. Promote a culture where in your manager also knows about your subordinates and what they are good at.
- Provide them your support towards their career goals.
- Finding a good balance between becoming too strict (getting work done) vs too supportive ( some lemons take advantage of this).
If you end up doing half of the above they will remember you throughout their career. I was fortunate enough to have two manager in my career like that. Both of them I still reach out for career guidance.
Dude, this is awesome! I haven't been fortunate really to find this, but the best answer I have seen. I am gonna keep this in mind

Don’t be so worried about micromanaging that you end up not managing at all.

Don't be a jerk ,simple
If someone is underperforming, try to understand the root cause instead of throwing them under the bus
Create a positive env inside the team. A bad manager is the reason ,lot of people quit job
Give credit where it is due.
People want money, appreaction and good work- find ways to provide them at least 2 of them

First off congratulations. It is a big responsibility
While you be receptive to your reportees needs, keep a boundary of respect. Ensure assigned work is getting done by people whom it is assigned to.
Appreciate in public, scold in private (if needed)
Judge work by genuine performance and try keeping your biases at bay (difficult but not impossible)
Be good to your juniors, be a mentor not a manager! Work hard with them dont shout, dont get cocky or be bossy, be firm but be soft hearted

I guess - have career conversations with them regularly and take their growth seriously as well.. this is from a non-manager perspective..

Juniors ko bhai banke rakho,
Bhai panti Mai kam karenge and karwayenge bhi
@YourChosenHell exact opposite. keep bhai culture at bay. bhai-culture gives way to the lemons @zepto suggested.
being a good mentor doesn't need one to be a 'bhai'.
Since you're empathetic enough to come looking for tips to be better, I'm more concerned about the boundaries you'll have to keep. Make your teammates more accountable, and be accountable yourself, ig.
If any of your resources are actually asking you to TRUST them, give them at least a chance 😕🙏. You never know how precious your one chance will be for them.
Some people get so demotivated, just because no one trusts him/her.
- some people ✋
Do not micromanage your team mates. Don't bug them often. It really pisses them off.

Man that's really cool you is asking for feedback!
What I would really love in a manager as a dev is reduce unnecessary meetings??
And don't micromanage, let me do the work at own pace!
Good luck!
Thank you 🥹 .. Yes, some meetings are just genuine waste of time and energy.. it's basically managers who have nothing to do just collecting everyone in a room to pass their time and do small talk to "build so called rapport" 🤦

Exactly, anyways good luck!
Well, I can say how to not be like one.
Please don't be like my manager, who doesn't value other people's opinions.
He just cut off while a person was speaking.
You've to be a bit liberal to your team and don't act like you're a headmaster at school.
Please care when your team tells you about their struggles. No one says without expecting help from 'manager'.
Don't blame your own team when something bad happens in front of others. You got to defend no matter how bad the situation is.
Well wishes on your work ahead!
Get the good cop bad cop act right, don't overdo both. Maintain balance between the 2

Trust, but verify. Trust in your team members abilities but make sure you verify their work yourself or by allocating a resource.

Congrats.
Remember you have two kinds of emails to send all the time
1. Please take care/ for your info and action.
2. Whats the status?
Please don't do anything like working and bring disrepute to the manager community.

Congratulations
Be a manager under whom you like reporting to 😊
To build rapport, trust, understand team dynamics (like strengths of each team member) needs some time and for team to adjust to your managing style. Beginning 1 or 2 months getting feedback from your team helps the transition smooth.
