Car Buying Guidance(Am a newbie): Old or used route?

Hello Everyone,

Need some guidance as to buy a new or old car.

To give some context regarding my dilemma:

I don't have any experience whatsoever in cars. But I keep reading blogs/articles from TeamBHP and watch couple of YouTube channels just to keep in touch with what's happening in the world of cars/Automobiles.

Backstory: During corona, my mother insisted me to buy a second hand car as I was staying at home and we could visit nearby religious places. I kept searching in my hometown(Manually + olx) but could not get a proper car at decent price. So I just dropped it. And while having some conversations with my mother, I yelled at her(I feel VERY 😞 BAD) saying I will never buy a car, as it is a liability. She left it at that. Then restrictions cleared and I had to go back to office.

Current Day My mother works as a school teacher and she will be retiring this October. So I'm thinking to give her a car(Either Second hand or First hand) as her retirement gift 😊. I don't know whether to go for a new one or used one, as I myself don't know driving. I have just been to driving classes(That too in 2020) and don't have confidence to drive in Bangalore. I'm thinking to keep the car in my hometown and keep a driver for taking my parents to wherever they want to visit. Plus whenever I come back here, I can learn driving. Plus me and wife can take it for long drives back to Bangalore and keep it for couple of months for taking it out on weekends(For learning driving).

Currently this is what I'm thinking: For new one: Budget is upto 10Lakhs(On road) For used one: Preferably less than 5 Lakhs. That is, If I get a good deal.

Should I go for a new one or old used one?

Kindly help me in deciding 🙏

just one suggestion: please go for automatic, it’ll be easier for you or for your mom to learn.

your post is so wholesome ❤️, it is not a liability if it improves the quality of life of your family ! you don’t need to be extravagant with it, just buy something that is funcitonal and safe.

regarding new or old, i’ve done little research. so, i’ll stay away from commenting on it.

good luck 🤞🏻

But will it not be difficult to switch to Manual transmission cars later? It is just like learning gearless bikes and then moving to a geared one? Please correct me if I'm wrong, because this is how I have understood and learnt 2 wheelers and I might be wrong(in my assumption about learning to drive 4 wheelers)

I did not get the last bit. Were you trying to say you have not done enough research and HENCE, WILL NOT comment or you have done enough but WILL NOT comment (because of some reason known only to you 🤔 😅)

Buy a new car. Used cars in the lower segment (5-10l) are overpriced due to these cars24/spinny bullshit.

But mom an automatic. Based on your budget Baleno,Exter,Punch, Swift can all be decent purchases depending on what features you want.

Exactly my thoughts bro.
The cars shown on spinny/Truevalue/Cars24 are nowhere cheap and does not seem like a decent deal to proceed. If atleast the car is from some friends/family and known to us as to how it was driven and maintained, then we can definitely go for second hand car.

But I fear if something happens to new car, like getting scratches or dents while trying to learn then it would be very painful to see right?

Buying a used car can be very tricky for you with limited exposure to cars. Seller/Broker would be able to guess this immediately and utilise it to their benefits.

My recommendation would be to go for - Baleno AGS, some of the reasons -

  1. It’s a smooth, easy to drive car with automatic & 360 camera.

  2. Nexa post sales service support is better compared to Tatas or Hyundais

  3. It will fit your budget and you might not feel upgrading atleast for 5 years.

P.S. - It might not be best rated car on sheet metal safety parameter but comes equipped with 6 air bags.

Any idea as to what should be the criteria for searching used one? Like less than 30k or 50k, 1st owner, less than 5 year old, particular model etc?
It would be very much helpful🙏🙂

Considering everything go for used one. Reason - driver is going to drive mostly. Small commute routes. Mainly city drive. You and other family members will be learning.

Does a Used Car make sense?

Amateur car driver here. I was thinking of buying used cars. But the way second-hand cars are priced makes me question the whole logic of buying them.
