- Very high inflation averaging 10.2% during the UPA rule.
- Slowing growth in the second term due to global recession and scandals.
Congress (UPA) Positives
- Higher GDP growth average of 7.75% compared to 6.8% under BJP.
- Over 60 million jobs added, 7.5 million annually in non-farm sector.
- Unemployment declined from 8.3% in 2004 to 3.8% in 2011-12.
- Passed social schemes like NREGA, farm loan waivers.
- Annual FDI inflows grew from $5.3 billion to $36 billion.
BJP (NDA) Negatives
- Unemployment increased to 8.3% by 2023, highest in 45 years.
- Job creation is much slower at 1.4 million annually.
- Social spending continued but farm distress grew.
- 23 crore people pushed below the poverty line.
BJP (NDA) Positives
- GDP growth slowed due to COVID but recovered back to 9.1% in 2021.
- Fiscal deficit under control barring the 2020 pandemic year.
- FDI inflows further increased to $83 billion by 2019.
- Infrastructure building and digitalization bolstered. India's appeal.
