I don’t think they add any value but just keep seeking credit for others work.

After seeing current placement stats of top IITs, even after Day6 not even 50% of the batch is unplaced can we say that 2024 is the unluckiest batch? Students with good CGPA, having internships in reputed internships are not getting placed. It's worse for mediocre students. What are alternativev for these unplaced students?

Talked to the son of my Dad's friend recently. Brilliant kid has a good GPA from IIIT-H + 2 research internships and 1 summer internship at good companies. He still can't find a "good" company to get into. (Side Note: "good" implies a high paying job relative to last couple of years) Apparently, most of his friends in other colleges are in the same boat. Massive pay correction has happened. The undergoing rationale is that companies hired Class of 2022 with no restraint because the demand was really strong during their placement season in 2021. This appears to be directly correlated with quantitative easing in the US and a low interest rate environment that was conducive to fundraising for several Series A+ startups. By the time Class of 2022 entered the market, everything changed and they felt some short term change. However, Class of 2023 is having a much tougher time. They are shoved into the job market in a time where demand is low and they are competing with kids who graduated last year. Ongoing consensus appears to be that a huge chunk of their batchmates are going to get their Masters abroad. Their hope is that by the time they graduate out of grad school, the economy will pick up and demand will be strong while they're poised to take advantage of that with bump up credentials. Unfortunately, this also implies that many of them will end up in the CPT-OPT-H1B-Green Card hell. This is really a tough spot to be in.

I see candidates with 2-4 years earning in 20LPA+ whereas sales and marketing folks who sit with 4-8LPA tops. Isn't the disparity too much?

We hire interns occasionally, and the market for interns is so bad right now, students are approaching us to work for free (we do pay a stipend and don't ask for free work). Companies aren't even hiring that many interns, and college students need internship experience to add to their resume and compete in the market. Heck, MSMEs are shutting down and MNCs are doing layoffs, not very inspiring. We've managed to survive somehow through all the covid ups and downs. Would like to know more from students on GV, what's your college internship and placement scenario like? What are you doing to stand out?

Those who share career advice online are generally out there trying to shill you paid courses. They tell you what you want to hear so you pay up. 2. Any career advice that works will lose its edge over time. Because it becomes widely adopted, and that’s precisely because it works. Example: If everyone is building a portfolio website then it becomes the defacto standard. I’m not saying that don’t build a portfolio website. What I’m saying is, that it becomes less effective over time because you building one is not a clear differentiator. Imagine sending a letter by post to an early stage company’s founder where you want to work, he might be more willing to schedule a call with you because you chose an approach that they might not have experienced first hand ever. Also, I’m not saying that the above said approach will work, since it’s unproven you’ll have to experiment and evaluate if it works. Maybe a good heuristic is to “do what it takes to stand out” and that means being creative with how you navigate work life. 3. Those giving advice generally impose their thought model onto you. They make assumptions basis what they think is right. This is not a bad thing but it does not account for your specific constraints. Finally, if you do want to ask for advice. 1. Ask “How” questions to those not much older than you, since they are executing in the trenches. 2. Ask “Why” questions to much older folks, you try to get closer to their first principles, which is the base level truth that cannot be divided further. Avoid asking “What” questions to anyone, generally it’s good to think them through yourself.

Disclaimer this is not a rant or this has nothing to put in bad way someones hard work. With so many ppl making tutorials and selling courses online, I had my few observations. I welcome ppl to join on this discussion with their point of views as well. The most important things is you need a solid company name on your resume, doesn’t matter what work you might have done there. Everyone knows the meatiest work in google is done at west coast office(just an example). This gives you the starting point, I would not disagree to the fact that these guys put on the hard work to crack the interviews, but that doesn’t mean you start selling a dream to everyone. It will be like what harshad mehta did to his clients during the days. If a person is working in some unknown company and even though the person teaches really well, I bet there will be hardly any takers for his/her course. Teaching is an art as per me, not everyone can be a great teacher. There are some good ones out there but majority of them don’t fall under above category. I would say they are social media influencers with a bit of tech knowledge. We have already lost a generation with rot learning and now with the rise of these ppl, the day is not far way when a person aceing the interview knows jack shit when given an actual problem to solve at workplace.
