Experienced PMs - how are you upskilling?

I'm wondering if there are actually any freelance or part-time opportunities for product managers. I have only seen PMs work in full-time positions. Is PM by design a full time function? Fellow PMs do share your 2 cents on this! 🙌

Hello All!! Needed some advice with upskilling to further my career in Product Management and add more dimensions to it. For some context, I have 4.5+ YoE in the software industry, primarily functional roles including about 3 years in Product Management. I want to up-skill myself in some hard skills as I think I have decent exposure in soft skills/functional aspects of PM but lack in the former. Have been thinking of the following: 1. APIs (Conceptual and hands on) 2. Data Analysis (SQL to be precise) 3. Low/No Code Tools I have about 6 months before I start looking for a new role and want to add these to my profile so as to land a good job. Please share your inputs and feedback if these would be useful in a real-life scenario and any other suggestions, if applicable. Counting on the advice and thanks in advance :)

I am PM with around 5 yrs of experience. I’m struggling to take my skill to next level. always receive feedback from management that output isn’t good, mostly that UX isn’t good. what can I do to improve my work? 1. Read books ? 2. Study successful products from outside ? 3. Listen to podcasts 4. Work with great product people? but hardly these exist 5. leave this field altogether? 6. Just have patience and keep learning everyday? Can experienced people share what has worked out well for them? or point me to some directions?

So I've met many PMs in my career. Most have been sub par, poor performers, can't even do IC work. The ones who can do IC work, can't think. The IC work is generally project management not product. They need someone to tell them directions So here's a few things. The best PMs I've met, are good engineers. Yes. These are the same folks who come for product management conferences and are respected. Of course not all engineers are good at product. The role of product came up with manufacturing first when you had product designers who worked with engineers and had a good understanding of both engineering limitations and user understanding. Some of the PMs I have met don't even talk to users. The reason i am seeing an issue in PMs in India is the increase in demand in the role, and a lack of supply. There is a product engineer role, I met a few folks who are doing that, they were amazing. Knew technology, users, product and super passionate. I'm not saying this is a hard and fast rule, I'm sure there are folks who have a natural inclination, so if you're an exception, understand that. Don't get offended by the statement

I last did a full fledged PM Role 5 years ago at an early stage startup (B2B SaaS). Post that moved on to building my own startup, spent the early years exclusively hands on the product (0-1) but last 28 months or so since my cofounder joined, I let him manage the product strategy and lifecycle since I had to take the lead on Sales and other aspects My current work with regards to product is more or less product vision and feedback. I feel I need to up my game in building my product skills to a higher level now as the product is getting mature and we are aiming to go global soon. I unfortunately don’t have anyone to mentor at the moment. How should I go about doing this ? Do you think going back to something like a product school for a 15 week Program could help ? The outcome I hope is set myself on the path to become a good Product Strategy leader with reasonable acumen on processes and systems and at the same time translate the learning to help scale the product better. Would be happy to take some ideas or places to look at for one. TIA

Hi guys, I have 2 yrs of work ex in an almost pm role in bfsi. I'm working on a lot of things and gaining exposure but many teams are not structured properly, which makes me slower and limited after a certain point. How to propel into product roles? Will hellopm course be helpful? Or some heads-up in a direction will be helpful!

I understand this is not exactly about being a PM , a little background - I've done some Comms/ branding work in some big name companies & startups, I have the inclination to learn and understand how PM works and wanted to understand if there's any course/ bootcamp/ project I can take up to apply for Product Marketing Manager roles?
