Is studying NLP even worth it in the age of OpenAI? 😱
Studying NLP today is just like learning how to write cursive.
It might be fun but it is useless.
It's like asking " do you really need to study multiplication, division, addition and subtraction since the calculator does all these things for you".
You need to know fundamentals or else how will you pinpoint issues in the pipeline when the system is in place.

That's a good point,
I was curious if I would need NLP in future as a Data Scientist or MLOps engineer, I am rooting for these two jobs.
If you wish to create your own Jarvis, ChatGPT than definitely. Compilers, NLP that GenAI.

That is a very good question. I think you should still study to have a better understanding of how things are working
Learning the basics and workings of NLP is always beneficial. Nowadays the work is geared more towards how you apply the LLMs. Knowledge of NLP like tokenization, how you fine-tune is always going to help. How you apply NLP has changed but it is not going away.
I think a lot of work is still to be done. OpenAI will improve multifold and the journey has just started.
I think people who understand NLP well will be the ones that will contribute to OpenAI/Gemini etc..
The jobs to create such services will only increase.
Automation look away manual jobs but many jobs in research development etc. Same will apply here
What I think is, it's actually needed more now, because now it's not just textbook stuff anymore, so one should definitely need to know basic to grasp whatever is coming ahead, also it'll give you confidence when you understand the fundamentals of how things are working. So definitely worth it.

No point in studying if you ain't interested in it. Better to be highly skilled in something you already work at.
This is just the start of AI, it’s like asking the question is it worth learning how to build websites post 2002.
