Experienced Casteism While House Hunting in Noida
I recently experienced casteism for the first time in Delhi/NCR while house hunting in Noida. I joined a new company in May in Noida and was looking for a house in Sector 46, close to my office in Sector 126.
I visited a property in Sector 46 through a broker. The owner showed me and my fiancé around, and we discussed the usual details about my background and our plans. I liked the property and negotiated for an AC, bed, and fridge, agreeing to pay the advance rent and security deposit right away.
As we were leaving, the owner asked for my full name and inquired about my surname. When I told him I am Dalit (Scheduled Caste), his expression suddenly changed. He then said, "Ab nahi dunga tumko" and shut the door on us.
This was my first encounter with such blatant discrimination in my 10 years of living in Delhi/NCR. Pretty saddened by this incident.

Look, even our parents ask for surname etc... but buck stops at when we can confidently determine they don't cook/bring non veg at home. Even though if a person says he is vegetarian the trust angle comes in that if he can actually walk the talk.
So yeah we wouldn't rent out to a large section when we also live in that same building. There was a patch of few years where we lived elsewhere, that's when we didn't care... As owners we have this much right.
So yeah it could be that you might have actually faced casteism, but at the same time, you would have also mis-read his preferences.

While it's completely against humanity and probably laws too, unfortunately we can't change the mindset of people overnight.
Yes it's unfortunate but there's nothing much we can do about it.
I believe that all the owners across the country should strictly mention their criteria in terms of caste, religion, region, gender, sexual orientation, etc so that one knows if they should even bother wasting their time by contacting such owners or not.
Thats the sorry state of Indian Society and caste system.
