Manager discussing the negotiations instead of HR
Guys, one of my friend is going through interviews for a late stage ecom startup. and surprisingly the hiring manager who took the one of the rounds comes to him on a call post the last round. bit weird from my pov since he told HR was involved at every step for scheduling interviews but now for the negotiation part directly HM has called. Any thoughts on this? acc to me this tells a lot about the culture of the company as HRs are given less importance, HM holds more power which they can abuse to their terms. what you all viners think about this?
Just a counter perspective, this is normal in plenty of mid sized companies. My current manager and I discussed comp before I started. They have access to all this data anyway.

obviously they have the access to data but conversations are extremely subjective and HR are supposed to better negotiators here given this what they study. overriding these conv directly by HM seems like overconfidence, rest i'm not sure, haven't came across this yet. it could be the case that role offered would be more senior or would require larger responsibilities

It can impact the relationship with the manager - not ideal. Negotiations should ideally happen with HR or recruiters.
Very common in startup, nothing wrong as far as the quoting is right. Eventually, founder has this data.
Pretty common... They say HR cos it's an easy out later on and the manager can pleas helplessness later on... Always the person who owns the cost centre would have the final say

am surprised that HR given less importance bothers you. In any company HR hold less power than others.
Their importance in a company is the equivalent of katrina kaif's role in suryavanshi. Their presence is just a formality. The absence doesn't affect the story.
Nothing uncommon for startups. In fact for my previous startups, HMs were the ones who negotiated on the salary part. HR wasn’t involved at all. They just come in to place in case the salary negotiations don’t go through.
The case is different for MNCs though, wherein sometimes some managers may have lesser salary than the person hired, on which case salary is negotiated by the HR.

Can we please stop believing that HR is some kind of guardian angel who comes to save employees? HR works FOR the company. The company's interest comes first, so in a fight between you and manager, the manager will win unless they did something illegal - in that case HR will side with you because HR is trying to protect the company. It shouldn't be difficult to understand.
