GMaps is focussing on the important features. Like finding the fastest route. Very few people care about these 3D view of a building.
Also google maps has penetrated most countries while Apple maps is only prevelant in US.
I don't think they will fall behind anytime soon.

The specific reason why the White House doesn’t receive higher resolution updates is because there was once an incident involving maps&white house. Was the on call on that escalation. There are some XX thousand listings that we don’t touch and don’t allow updates without proper approval.
Next, Apple poached half my managers and team when they failed initially . Those guys built the improvements that you see today. I’m not sure what the situation is now but the sheer number of human interventions that gmaps used to do is hard to replicate.
