Got promoted during an interview, what to expect as CTC?

Hey folks, so I am a 2022 graduate and I'll try to make this short as much as possible:

  • I was giving interview at a company for backend dev
  • Over the period got promoted from MTS to SMTS with CTC correction from 12.8 to 14.74 at my current company
  • Last Friday did the cultural fitment round
  • After following up got a call from HR saying they'll update me by this weekend
  • However I updated her with the information regarding role change and CTC correction
  • Now she asked what'll be your expectations
    • First, she asked whether I could shift with the same CTC, but I was hesitant, she took it as no.
    • I asked what is your range? She said there is no range
    • I told her as per market standard, she said I'll take 30% to herself as of now

So I need help here:

  • what can I tell her? Or should I tell her something before the weekend or not?
  • Should I ask her if it'll be senior role as I am a SMTS now?

Also, this is the current salary range as per Glassdoor of this company:

  • Sr. backend: 25
  • SDE: 15 + 6

Additional info for my current company:

  • My manager said that my base will be matched with SMTS in April which is 18-24
  • Also heard the news that the company will not give appraisal to anyone in April

If you're senior at your current company, you're not entitled to become a senior at the other company as well. You'll get whatever level you are interviewing for.

The promotion/increment would have come in due course. It's not that you received a sudden bonus. The initial communication with HR should've accounted for it.

Forget that, why are you looking for a % hike above your current CTC? I'm unable to understand that part.
This way if you plan to switch within 1yr will you also look for another 30% min hike? That's bs.

Determine what you want, ask the HR for it. If they refuse or lowball, interview elsewhere. If they offer you what you wanted, take it, be happy.

Thanks for the senior role views.

Regarding the % hike, I just mentioned market standard she assumed 30% to herself as I didn’t wanted to put a number at that moment.

Okay, then will ask a bigger amount and see what happens, post the confirmation as they are going to review all round and update me

Adding to @DiwaliBonus. Ask for CTC based on Glassdoor/ambitionbox numbers as a range.

Adding my 2 cents

  1. Designation is vanity, salary is sanity
  2. It is not designation, but salary which reflects your worth in company’s eyes. It is better to be a SDE-1 with 25LPA, then SDE-2 with 20LPA. Focus on maximising the salary, designation/seniority apne aap optimise ho jayegi.
  3. Most probably your manager is lying about salary matching in April. Normally salary correction based on designation band happens along with promotion and not couple of months after that. Also in your case company already gave you a raise along with promotion. It doesn’t make sense to give you a 15% raise during promotion and then give you another 30%+ raise couple of months later. If company had to correct your salary they would have done it in single go.
  4. For the HR I will suggest let her come back with the numbers first, and then tell them your expectation which is for sure higher than 30% on your current ctc (what HR wrote down)

Thanks you!

Yeah, just thinking I get an update asap and the number is not just some 30% difference as she is assuming that as of now. Will wait for offer first then will worry about the number!

Thanks again
