Hate can do attitude
Let me explain, managers or senior folks who reply/slack/email or do any form of communication outside working hours and especially over weekends… I hate it. If u do it without the counter party explicitly expressing such urgency then you are way worse.
Just because their current lifestyle or situation allows them to do it… They do it without a second thought. They do not realize that this sets the benchmark or expectations for others who may not be able or like to do same.
You might say they’re not coercing others to do it then what’s the harm? Well this little thing is what sets the chain reaction to unhealthy WLB. The stakeholders or their heads get the wrong impression and create unhealthy expectation from others. This is just a rant and if u are such a person… Stop doing it without thinking of its unintended consequences.
Haan toh bhai tu mat kar They reply at a time that works for them- you set the right expectations for yourself. Unke response time se teri expectation setting kyu change hogi?
Aur nahi toh kya....take a stand for yourself even if all your teammates might be replying just for licking your boss's boots
I’ve mentioned my view on this in last para. Problem is that stakeholders are also humans so they build their expectations based off that one person representing the whole team. Now that one person will not have all the answers everytime so if u don’t keep up when answer is expected from u then u are the odd one out. Bcoz many would naturally give in to follow the same behaviour. Again, it’s all about setting boundaries which should start from top down.
I see people in my company use this, or a version similar to this, as their signature.
“I work flexibly, no need to reply to my emails outside core hours”
I like this approach. They might reply on weekends or outside of regular working hours if that suits them, but they clearly call out that they do not expect someone to reply during such hours.
Haan bhai, and that is the difference among people, and between those who rise in organizations vs. who don't.
You do what you can. Others will do what they can. This world and organizations are set up in which everyone does their best, and some get more success and some lesser. Everyone will not work according to your personal views and mental constraints.
Yes, and people who have can-do attitude will raise the expectations and the bar, as they are intended to, and they will go and achieve more success in organizations, while people without the can-do attitude will of course not meet those raised expectations and get left behind.
That's why organizations and society are a meritocracy and pyramid-shaped, and people who do more rise more. You can't expect everyone to abide by your standards of can-do and performance, and the world to be cube-shaped instead of pyramid-shaped 😄
If u cannot raise expectation or bar without communicating at odd hours then you’ve other set of problems. I am not against doing it when it’s must and counter party is aware u r going out of ur way. And those who do it for their own success, no problem with them too as long as they ensure it does not become the norm or sets the same expectation from others. Bcoz with this logic u’ll reward those with less life outside work (hence the more availability) the most and does that make sense ? Maybe it does to corporate but is corporate ur friend? Anyway, I am not imposing my thought process on anyone… It’s just a rant.
Also I think u took my can-do as someone who will work on things outside his job role or work beyond work hours. No, those ppl can get more success for all I care. My problem is with the kind of communication which in turn leads to a higher standard of availability for everyone.
I think you're confusing two things here - the perspective of the capitalist / corporate system vs. your individual perspective as a worker.
Of course, the capitalist and corporate system is not your friend, but your employer, and it's designed to extract the maximum effort and time from you, to the owner's / shareholder's benefit.
From your worker's perspective, it is not good to communicate outside the work hours for your work-life balance.
However, from the perspective of your employer, the employee's dedication to the corporate system and a can-do attitude, are beneficial, and will reward it. Because it shows the dedication of the employee to sacrifice their own personal life interests in favor of the interests of the owners / shareholders. And yes, a can-do attitude and dedication includes everything, including quick work-related communication during personal hours.
And some people will always strive extra to impress the corporate system, for those extra rewards, including growth in the hierarchy.
You, from your worker's perspective, might resent it, but the corporate system will reward such behavior, whether you like it or not, over others who do not have the can-do attitude to show such dedication. This is the way the system is designed, and yes, it does raise expectations for everyone, because it's intended to do that to make everyone sacrifice more and work harder the benefit of corporate. And yes, it's designed to reward those people more who have lesser personal life outside, because they're dedicating their life to their employers. And you ranting and resenting it will not do anything.
The best you can hope to achieve in this system, is to start your own company someday, and have your employees communicate in their personal time for your benefit, while you sleep. And then reward such dedicated employees with growth and promotions, for working in their personal time towards increasing your wealth😄
