Having fun while working in a Big4.
September End = Quarter end as per Big4 lingo. And quarter end invites a whole lot of workload a whole lot of work pressure (especially if the project is related to a listed entity).
In te midst of this crazy timeline, I decided to enjoy a teensy bit of the festive season and booked Garba Night Event tickets for me and all my colleagues.
But the work pressure was so much, we couldn't even find time to go shopping for garba outfits. At somewhere around 5pm I told my manager that we need to find some way to go to this event.
He asked us to shut our laptops down and go to the event, while he'd stay back and take care of any pending deliverables.
We logged off after about an hour and went home, got dressed and went to the event. We danced our hearts out, played dandiya and did some garba moves, had fun-filled after office hours.
We left the venue at around 10.30 and reached home within an hour or so. I felt extremely guilty for leaving work behind, so I decided to login for an hour or so, only to find out that all my colleagues had already logged in, and were working even before me.
I believe that all my colleagues were as tired as I was still chose to work, and our manager didn't even ask us to work post the event, it was a collective feeling of responsibility, which made each of us do this.
I'm not glorifying over-working and toxic work culture, but sometimes as proud as we are to be a part of "Big4" we have to give in all of ourselves to send out deliverables due on the statutory deadlines.
I don't know how long this is sustainable, but I know for sure that these are the years to learn, to work hard and to grow and that is what I'll keep in mind, while I sustain this highly demanding job ✨
So you all left work at 5 for garba, feeling guilty.
Then you all log back in at 1130, feeling guilty.
And you make a post about "having fun while working at big4"?
Can't say I'm surprised. My wife worked for one of the big4 for almost 5 years and felt "proud" on toxicity and 12-14 hours workdays which almost broke her - until she met me and realised she can make twice the money while working regular hours. - all that with a single switch.
Read up about Stockholm syndrome. And good luck.
I think you didn't understand the Crux of this post. I'm not glorifying over-working, as I clearly mentioned. I'm mentioning the maheer fact that each of us had a guilt conscience about taking mere 4-5 hours out for ourselves, that we voluntarily logged in post reaching home. This is the environment we are sustaining not because of the company but because of the "statutory deadlines". And like I said, i don't know how long this is sustainable for me, and I'm sure there are hundreds and thousands like me, but at this moment I can either crib and complain about the situation or be positive and take up challenges in a more optimistic way and I chose to do the latter.
I hope one day I can find a better paying, better wlb job like your wife 😅 till then I choose to stay positive with what I have to do in order to continue being here.
Even while saying that you are not glorifying overworking, you are doing exactly the same . If you can't even enjoy on your after work hours , what's the use? Plus you keep talking about statutory deadlines, who creates and approves these deadlines, it's you and you only while saying smugly that I proudly work in a big4...
Mind sharing your compensation?
Mind sharing me a referral for finance role?
It's a decent living, but I prefer not to discuss specifics. Let's just say I'm living comfortably, but not extravagantly.
Everyone is seeing your dandiya sticks and here I am counting the small circular dots on your palm🙂🙂
Lol 😂 Did you?
Yep I did👀
