How are Life insurance and Term insurance different?

I am in my early 20s, and just started working. I came across a common point to buy a term plan instead of traditional Life insurance plans. I have only seen traditional LIC policies. Can you guys explain the difference between both along with the pros and cons of each? I am trying to find what's best to make me and my family secure.
