How to discuss growth with my Engineering Manager during 1:1?

I have read and heard it several times, that in one on one’s with your manager discuss your growth with him, but I never understood it, how to do it in every 1:1 or more than once or twice? Growth is something very simple to me Software Engineer to Senior to Principal to Staff etc

And you keep working at next level and you get promoted, but what discuss about it in every 1:1 ?

  1. Make a common document.
  2. Discuss what are their expectations of you.
  3. Discuss what you want to do this month.
  4. Then next month, go through the document to see what worked, and what did not work.
  5. Why did/didn't it work out?
  6. Repeat

There must be a roadmap that you want to follow to go from Software Developer to Senior Developer instead of just increasing your years and getting promoted.

Discuss that roadmap with your manager in 1:1.

Also, not every 1:1 needs to be productive or career-changing and it's ok. Don't fret too much.

Basically how you are performing ofc. Are you performing in the range for the ambition you have. Is there specific feedback to be worked upon?

These questions are good for once, but you can’t ask this every month and especially when you keep talking to manager every week for some work

That's upto you. It's you who has to grow, so you need to put efforts on this
