IBM planning 80% layoffs
All of our fears about AI was correct!
They will take our jobs, they will overtake the world & will finally turn against us.

Nobody believed me when I started talking about this. But now I have had many credible management people come back and state their findings that a lot of layoffs could be in anticipation of AI capabilities improving rapidly in the future.
AI hegemony over jobs is inevitable. The other folks sleeping should find the courage to open their eyes and see the writing on the wall.

What should a common guy do? Find alternative ways to earn $?

In the short term, yes. Accumulate as much wealth and resources that you can.
In the longer term, the value of resources will eventually change and large scale civil unrest is inevitable. Currency might not remain useful. Resources like food, water, shelter and community will always remain valuable. So either build or join a local community of like-minded people to ensure your pooled resources are protected. I have a lot of other arguments, rationale and tips to share that might need a separate post.

Lol , there's no way they could layoff 80% without destroying their profit centers. Even if AI somehow could take over all the IC roles, the top management need ICs to justify their own employment

Well I think you haven’t looked inside our Recruiting team. You know we have laid-off most recruiters & technical sourcing, although right now 3party temp are working but soon all resume indexing, screening, interview slot will be done by Gemini Pro. 😧

Cost centers like HR might be an exception as they don't generate income. If this 80% layoffs is meant for the total workforce, it's different. Profit centers like Search or Cloud wouldn't want to get rid 80% because managers , VPs need manpower to show impact. If all of sudden there are only 20% people left, then how can they justify their "management" roles.

These comments are made by management to show the world that they are also working on AI.
Predictions made by suits hold no water. If AI is worth so much they say, it would have been adopted by defence way before it came civilian. If defence ilhas not adopted it, we have no reason to worry.
This is just the Y2k of this decade.
If he said AI will replace 100 jobs , it won't make it to news. So, he come up with such numbers.
So according to him, each department in IBM will have a janitor, who will come in the morning open the office and switch on the server/AI. End of day AI would have made million dollars and he would switch the lights and go home. So there will be 100janiotrs and 21 board members. Ibm will make the billion dollars. What nonsense?

We also rejected the rumours of layoffs at G when a birdy said in internal channels.
Look where are we now; AI is a serious threat to everyone’s job. You can continue to deny if you like; but in next 18-24 months there will a significant force already reduced in all orgs.

The kind of hiring that happened in 20-21 is the reason for the layoffs. There is not much fall in profits. The excess hiring and their unreasonable pay are being rationalised.
2 years back they said the same about web3. Mgmt loves recession. It's keeps employees in check.

If something like that happens where the 90% are not needed then it will be the end of the road for everyone. As if the rich can escape unscathed.

Are you serious?

IBM has been doing this for ages. They will fire 1000 this month and hire 2000 a few months later.

Just one bloody supermajority by U.S Senate in Democrats favour, all big tech will be broken up. The key to world peace lies in American Voters. Everybody seems to hate big tech

I saw this while I was about to sneeze. And instantly said WTF after carefully reading. Like really?

3.9k IBM layoffs??
Can anyone validate this article? If it's true, then does it effect their cloud team? https://www.businesstoday.in/jobs/story/tech-layoffs-ibm-to-lay-off-3900-employees-as-it-misses-annual-cash-target-367656-2023-01-26
