Infra isnt a problem, cars are...
Cars are a terrible way of transporting people, they take up a lot of space and slow down traffic movement. SF has the best and widest freeways but has the worst traffic. Being a middle income nation about to invest in infra, we have to make a choice if we want to go the American way? Or can we come up with an Indian solution.
After a decade of flyover construction, it might be too late. We will end up with even larger city with 4X the road length and much worse traffic.
I believe in the European approach of paid entry for cars in Central Business District to discourage car ridership and funding Public Transport.
Bangalore is a case study on how to kill a city in 50 years.
We're midway through that journey and I'll be surprised if it sustains as an urban agglomeration beyond 2049.
I wanna stay optimistic. Was reading an old piece about Sao Paulo 2010. Traffic there was so worse that a startup was doing helicopter rides for CEOs on rooftop helipads over business districts. Roads in Brazil were bad that grains got wasted on trucks and fell off due to potholes. Some Ruchir Sharma's book.
Indian indicators are much better. I hope municipal bonds go mainstream
Traffic is the least of Bangalore's troubles. In decreasing order of gravity (per me):
Potable Water Waste disposal (Solid & Sewage) Power Transportation
You may still solve the last two. Waste disposal needs huge and painful rework and investment.
Water is near impossible to solve for and will be Bangalore's downfall.
