Interviewer not turning on Camera

Guys genuinely want to understand is it fine for an interviewer not having their camera turned on while interviewing? Need an honest opinion not an empathy.

I just had an interview and also similar experiences in the past. I understand there could be some genuine reasons, but ignorance to not mention it is something i find weird.

The interviewer was like I am from IIT and working in this field. Give your intro. No fucks for camera explanation.

You shouldn't take offense. He may just be a dude who didn't even wash his face while working remotely and be conscious about turning on the camera.

unless one is naked, they should switch on the camera. especially when they expect the candidate to be online. Anyways, washing his face is not going to make him Milind soman.

Majority of Indian interviewers never turn on camera! 🙃

Don’t know why but even HR is fine with this 🤷🏻‍♂️

Interviewers in India (from poor work cultures) often feel like they already own you That is also the mentality they'll have when they hire you

PeppyQuokka

Yes, they don't want to show their face and identity but they want to see you without fail...this is nonsense. They should understand the privacy of a candidate also. It's very embarrassing when there is a one-sided video call interview, you only see your own face and talk like a fool

PeppyQuokka

The interview should be a very professional way...i.e., first of all the interviewer should switch on their camera and introduce themselves then they should ask the intro from the candidate and be followed by the next questions.

Everytime I take an interview, I switch on my camera first. Ensure that the candidate knows that it’s okay if they drop from the call due to a tech issue or network issue and that they can rejoin and if not the interview will be rescheduled. I also recommend that they get some water, and if not they can pause the interview and go get a glass of water whenever they need. Lastly, since it’s a virtual interview there might be instances of a bell ringing or someone walking in and it’s absolutely fine to answer them.

Just be human overall. Don’t need rehearsed answers and a grilling session. It’s a connect to know you and let’s focus on that.

As an interviewer, we expect the candidate to turn on their camera as part of the process so we’re sure nobody else is taking it on their behalf.

That said, it’s basic etiquette to do the same as an interviewer when requesting the interviewee to turn on theirs.

Yeah mate! I thought to mention “it would be great if you had your camera turned on”
But didn’t say it coz i felt it would have sounded condescending.

PeppyQuokka

Instead you might have told the interviewer that, is it a video call right? But I am unable to see you. If still he is not showing his/her face then you also turn off your camera stating that I think I have an network issue, am I audible?

Interviews are 2 way street. They evaluate you, you evaluate them.
At the end, before you join, you decide if you want to work with the people who have interviewed you. Do you like them etc.

Some people are new to interviews and they may not realise these things. If you feel seeing their face is important for you, Just ask them to turn on their camera. It could also turn out to be genuine reasons like low internet connection etc. But, if they refuse and show attitude, it shows more about them than about you, and you'd probably not wanna work with such a person

It's definitely impolite and not a good look. That said, do write a review about your interview on glassdoor, ambitionbox etc when the process is over so that this practice can be curbed

Because it is not mandatory for Interviewer but for candidate it is used as a proof of Identity.

I too agree, if the interview panelist is Indians they don't come online. HR is only concerned with the feedback and least concerned ok these approaches. But if the panelist has people from outside India, then there are chances that most of the panelist will come on videos including the Indian counterpart.

Most interviewers forget why they entered the conversation in the first place
