Investing in modern art. Good or bad idea?

Hey Viners, Has anyone here tried investing in modern art via platforms like Masterworks? Sounds like an interesting value proposition to diversify.

What are the cons one should keep in mind?

You'll need an understanding of the art world for better returns tbh. Fine to allocate a small sum.

Cons is the same as most other illiquid assets, can lead to losses or marginal gains and high opportunity cost.

That's for art in general^ ownership is yours. Which means taking care of it is your responsibility.

Masterworks is a business entity at risk of the usual perils , if they go under you might lose money. And you don't own the painting, only a hypothetical fractional token.

It's some sort of hybrid alternative investment fund based out of USA/Singapore.

If you're the explorer types, I'd recommend checking it out, it'll be a diversified bet outside of Indian markets.
