Investment Banking Intern; Advice

Hi everyone,

I'm an engineering undergraduate who has just finished my second year, and I have 1.5 months of vacation ahead. I've long been interested in investment banking and feel that now is the time to start taking concrete steps. However, I'm uncertain about where and how to begin. I've purchased the "Breaking into Wall Street" and "Wall Street Prep" courses. Could someone with experience in this field advise me on how to maximize the benefits of these courses? I understand that investment banking is highly competitive and that no course or certification can guarantee an internship at a Bulge Bracket firm. My expectations are realistic; my immediate goal is to secure an internship at a small/mid-market or boutique firm during the winter break to gain some experience. From there, I hope to eventually pivot to other firms.

My university isn't very well-known, and I don't have strong connections in the industry, which has been discouraging. The job market in India, much like elsewhere, doesn't have a well-developed culture for non-target schools. Though I have experience of cold emailing, using Apollo etc as used it a lot during my college clubs.

Any insights on what and how to learn, whether these courses are necessary for an intern-level position, attaching the images of the courses I have and can any of you suggest to me in what order I begin and is all even required just to get an intern that too in a boutique or mid-market bank?

If you can help me with a bit structured guidance, I would be immensely grateful, sharing my dummy mail; mymail8795@gmail.com

Thank you.

Edit: My 12 isn't that strong and I'm a GEM hence not considering the CAT route.

I have almost a similar profile and interest as you do. A GEM with interest in Investment Banking. Even though I'm in an IIT (2nd gen), looking at the trends and hirings of any firm for this role, and after talking to my seniors with similar interests, I was highly discouraged to pursue investment banking right after graduation. So I decided to get some work experience in a relevant industry (I chose consulting because that's also one of my interests and keeps a decent option open for me in case IB doesn't work out) and then do an MBA later to land an offer in IB. I recently finished my 3rd year and am interning at a Big 4 firm.

But your advantage is that you are working towards your goal well in advance so you should be able to get something good in the summer after your 3rd year. I suggest you keep looking for any intern role in relevant industry where a good amount of networking is possible because I think it would be essential to land a role that is not related to your core field. One thing I learnt while being here in a Big 4 is that networking is the key. Referrals will work wonders.

@RectangularMoney Thank you for taking the time to read and reply! I have some questions for you,

  1. as you said that you are doing an internship in consulting, can you tell me what skills you have had while applying to Big4 and what such employers seek when they are looking for interns

  2. Aware that Financial Modeling &DCF might not be directly applied in Consulting, what soft or tech skills must one have?

Any insights for me?

I'd have, but the files are over 120 GB, and uploading them would require a cloud service subscription, which would be an added cost for me just to share them. I hope you understand!
