Is managers giving “punishments” a thing for real?

Recently, a friend joined a bank. He was late to office a few times. To “teach him a lesson”, manager “changed his desk”.

When he asked the reason for this, manager said “this is your punishment for coming late to the office”. I mean, is this school-level micromanagement rampant in your org as well?

Is this some kind of banter or something serious? My manager used to write " i <3 liverpool" or " i <3 dhinchak pooja" on my whiteboard, when I used to come late. If I'm roaming around with my laptop open then he would mail "getting engaged , sweets at my desk " kind of mails.

Prank the manager with something harmless the next time he gets late. If he takes it in sporty way, then its regular office banter. Could be helpful in long run.

If it flips out, plan your exit

What are some dystopian policies at your work place?

Half day salary cut for every 3 days you're late is pretty freakin messed up. Curious to know what other ancient capatilist policies do corporates have in place to exploit all of us?
