New Work. Utterly Confused.

Hi, guys. I just switched to a new role (UX Writing) and its been 14-15 days. I am getting major work FOMO here. Here are two things I am feeling, help me navigate through this?

  1. I am not aligned to a project/account yet. Feeling a bit restless, I feel like reaching out to seniors and teammates and I do. Yet, there’s little clarity on how I will be resourceful to the entire set up.

  2. Brushing up on my skills until formal tasks are allocated to me. However, I learn more on the job, rather than through training. How to make most of the time and resources available?

  3. I am not sure if I am overthinking this, but I feel like my role isn’t as well-etched as I first thought it would be.

I think it’s normal to feel this way. The pace of the organisation totally varies. I lead content and in every set up, I have always given a month to my new teammates to settle.

If it’s a startup, it can be ambiguous to begin with. There’s so much happening that you are either pulled into projects without much context, or are given a breathing space to brace yourself for a big new project.

Explore the possibilities in your 1:1s with your manager. Tell them that you can take up more stuff, or perhaps seek clarity on the expectations from your work on the ongoing project. In terms of outcomes or impact. Ask about the metrics that the team is chasing and if they are open to A/B testing.

Creative roles can sometimes feel overwhelming because the feedback or outcome is often subjective. You have got the job, which means you are suited for it. A company wouldn’t invest in a resource otherwise. So, please don’t second guess or doubt yourself :)

TLDR: Have a chat with your manager + don’t doubt yourself!

All the best 😊

Hey there! I just stumbled across your post and wanted to know how your experience has been so far with UX? I am a technical writer and I have been wanting to change my career for some time but I am confused regarding whether to go into a writing based role or do an MBA. Would love to know your inputs and experience here!
