Received random salary a year later

i have received some amount today from Cognizant as salary today. But the catch is that I worked in Cognizant a year ago ( left around Sept 2022 ) . And even joined another company which i resigned from this july. Right now i am on a break from work unemployed due to medical reasons. And i really got some amount today as salary. I am confused - my F&F was settled last year only . can i contact someone at Cognizant ? did they do a mistake ?

Cuz someone told me if it was someones else salary credited to you by mistake then it can be considered as theft if not reported. I really dont know if thats true

Not theft, but yeah, strictly legally speaking, it is misappropriation of property if you don't at least inform someone

Kinda difficult to prosecute and the most you'll have to do is refund it after years of Cognizant litigating against you (you wouldn't necessarily have to reciprocate)

It could be an ex-gratia amount

Check if any bonuses for last financial period are being paid and you were eligible for it. Few companies do pay bonuses after employees have left . ( But yeah more than one year is not common , just check the cycle )

Relax , don't spend the money and let them come to you, they will probably figure it out by next week or so

There is some money you will get for 1st year after leaving is basic pay is less than some amount it is expected

What exactly is this - can you elaborate please

ZestyLlama

Yes please call them ,these companies are monsters they will punish the employee who did that mistake. If it's there is a difference in your Fnf also they will confirm so better call .

The bigger problem is the transaction on your pf account. It might lead to issues later in the BGV. Email cognizant team and ask why the amount has been credited.

Ethical dilemma

In my fnf, I got twice the amount. Probably an accounting error.. It's a big amount for me but for the company it isn't. Thinking to probably donate it. Should I inform the company? They have 100crs + anyways in the bank and they fired...
