Salary Discussion Tips

I have been applying for jobs, and every time I get a recruiter call, they ask me for my current СТС. Is it ok to tell them the current CTC at the very first call? Asking this because, in my current company, the budget was more but they gave me hike based on my previous CTC, because I had disclosed my current CTC before. Also, how do I tackle the question how much is my expected salary? Is it a good idea to tell them right away? Asking this because what if they have bigger budget but still end up paying how much I asked for.

PS: I am new to all of this, please help me how to tackle these questions.

Thank you.

Never ever give away your ctc on the first call. Deflect that question saying you get paid above band for your role and expect x% more above that. Let them guess.

Obviously this won't work every time so be prepared to walk away.

At some point if your are asking a lot more than they expected they are gonna call your bullshit.

When they look at your resume, your experience, current and past companies they already form a mental model of what is the Max you might be getting paid. Ask more than that and they will need proof.

Taking about money is a lot more nuanced than what I have described here. As much as your hard skills matter, your soft skills, your confidence, your ability to influence others matter a lot more. That's what will set you apart from people making top of the band and people receiving out of the band money.

You should tell them things. It will save YOU time.

They get 100s of Calls for the job and they can't just remember everyone all they will remember is the number linked with years of experience.

So if you don't answer the question. Don't expect them to remember you or consider you. It's obvious they will remember the guy and note down that X person is ready to work for N LPA vis-a-vis you who didn't answer the question.

[Unless and Until you bring anything special on the table eg: IIT, IIM, Reference, Made good money for the business, etc.]

Current and expected CTC

Recruiters always ask for your current compensation which is technically 'confidential'

It's unfair for you to disclose your compensation without getting something in return.

Let's CHANGE the tone of these conversations.

Salary negotiation

I got to know that budget for the role i interviewed is in range of 20-25 LPA. My last drawn salary itself is lower than the market standards. The company wouldn't give hike more than 30% considering my experience in the role domain. But...
