What is the difference between growth and Marketing growth
I have seen people on LinkedIn write growth team and some people write growth and Marketing . What do these people do
Why is it that the salaries for folks working in digital/ performance marketing/ growth roles way lower than tech/product roles? In most startups the mktg team is lean and impact per employee is high. Yet there is a huge discrepancy in the salaries. Can someone share their thoughts on this ? (Ps: not talking about the smo/seo people you see on LinkedIn)
I absolutely concur with the statement that growth teams are generally lean and high impact. I guess Indian tech industry over the years has established that engines who code and PMs who idéate are the ones who make the revenues happen and that all other roles are highly replaceable in the job hunt bloodbath. It’s very unfortunate, however many companies offer lucrative packages to growth teams like Uber, as they understand the impact really well.
Yeah at inmobi pmms are paid shit. My friend shifted from pmm to pm role exactly for the above mentioned reason.
All paths lead to product (if you don’t have engg background)
How are marketing and growth teams paid at MPL ? (When compared to PM, Devs etc)
Look at the founder. If he's tech based, he'll value that quality more. Plus, marketing efforts aren't quantifiable in the short term
Modern day startups are hooked on performance marketing like a drug. 10s of crores are spent everyday. Each rupee spent is tied to revenue and payback. So I would respectfully not buy your argument.
And those modern day startups will always take a huge hit on profitability because of being drunk on performance marketing. Then they will have to fire people to fix the mess that they had created in the first place.
The question is why should a startup pay you more than engineers? LOL
Not more but atleast remotely close. Currently Zameen asmaan ka farak hai.
This doesn't answer the question - "Why?"
I am a Marketer but I don't at all feel this. Being a marketer I want the product to be the best (for the user). And I fully support hiring the best engineers to develop the best product at the best salary.
I am not sure why should Marketer be paid more...(distribution and development both are different).
And I don't at all feel that I am underpaid. (Everyone else in my startup makes more than me majority of them are engineers and UX/product designers - but the thing is I earn more than the majority of marketers out there for the role and designation).
It all comes down to How better you are as a marketer and what value you bring to the table.
This doesn’t stand true everywhere. While it stands true for engineers, but the same doesn’t stand true for PMs. Engineers have hard skills which takes a lot of time to hone and develop. That’s why they can ask for premium. Also for marketing and growth roles, some companies pay a premium but this again differs from company to company. Growth roles command similar salaries in some startups.
~20% difference exists between marketing and product.

I see that Grapevine is mostly patronised by techies and product folks, and there's very little information available on other roles.
Can we come up with a list of startups/organisations that pay the best for Growth Marketers? Please ke...
