Signs of layoffs because of AI and how to prepare for it in Big 4? 😱
I am an entry level analyst in at Deloitte. Just wondering if these are some signs of a practice not doing great + potential layoffs in a few months/year.
- Utilization: ~45% last quarter. They originally said that it was a slow start to the year with low CapEx by companies but we still don't look good this quarter now.
There was a small call last night between a few people in this project level meeting and the senior management straight up said "Their is no demand and people are still on bench. We need to reallocate some headcount"
-
Headcount growth - Last 1.5 years ago, every month we had 10-15 people join our practice, This has literally gone down to 1-2 hires to replace people who have left.
-
Resignations: 6-7 people are leaving every month in my practice, which is quite harsh. Someone told me that everyone they used to work with when they joined have already left.
-
AI-pocalypse - I feel most companies think that they can now do AI inhouse and niche projects but higher costs because of MS/PhD folks working on it is something they dont want to go for anymore.
If a layoff is incoming, what would be the best ways to prep?
I see two options:
- Getting on a boring sad project but long term.
- Do nothing: I am literally the cheapest resource in the company so they would ideally layoff senior folks first, right??

Upskill upskill upskill, you never need to worry about layoffs
@DizzyNoise I am trying but it is affecting my mental health brutally.

Take a weekend Art of Living Online Meditation and Breath Workshop. It helps you to calm down your stress and also helps you to take decisions rationally rather than reel in stress all the time. DM if you want to know more

It's more due to industry wide slowdown and greedy shareholders than AI. Companies now don't care about public perception anymore as layoffs have been normalised. Your head boomer will walk into the office and see people doing wfh or sitting a bit idle and the first thing he would suggest would be to layoff and overwork the rest. Same story for our chindi founders.
@Elon_Musk Agreed hard on this.
At an entry level it does feel like powerless. But I would recommend to have a personal hobby to fall back on. I understand we as indians ha ve struggled to build a hobby (I myself have struggled on this) I would encourage if we could do this might help us to reduce the stress and have a mental satisfaction that this is something we can do this as well.
@Curiousmonk I completely agree on this macha
I had my own analysis and concluded jobs ending by 2030 for IT geeks likes us.
People will be placed just for monitoring on managerial roles that too for once who have deep connection
My path to handle this change, jump ship get into telecom and networking project. Know the dept inside out, research and lead in solution development for such products which will be consumed by AI to perform the same work you do now.
Target specific domain specific technology specific roles which will keep you steps ahead of AI for few decades till things settle and a clear path for next Gen career pops up.
@Stricker141 Makes sense bro.
Only 45% utilisation. Damn man. Which module is this? Shall we talk in DM
Layoffs are not happening mate, especially for AI folks, just keep your skills upto day and trying to get on a project. You'll be fine.
