Skills for a new Product role

Will be starting a Product Analyst role in July at a fintech firm. What skills should I try to acquire as a pre-requisite for the role? so that I am not surprised and overwhelmed initially.

Very simple.

  • don’t be overwhelmed, just be excited for your new adventure!
  • Speak with your direct manager and skip supervisor, ask this exact query. They will give a more contextual and relevant answer than anyone on this platform (including me).
  • Speak with peers (in your fintech firm) on how they do things, what things they do etc.
    This will give you context in addition to #2.

Understand the business. Understand the competitors.

Think about how your inputs can help business grow. Think at ten thousand feet (that’s what leadership team does) but have to ability to zoom in. Be grounded. Respect the folks who’ve been around.

Get good with sql Python (whatever they use) and try to spend a lot of time with frustrated pms. Usually their gut feeling is good, it’s just that they don’t have data to prove. Be around, go to office, spend time with senior folks who’ve been around.
