Switch to PM?
Indian. I am a SDE (backend) currently. ~2 yrs exp. 16 LPA and I work 40-50 hrs a week. I like where I am, but I am not feeling the zeal for tech anymore. Probably will do a MBA down the line (thinking abroad, not sure)
Looking for equal or greater pay, similar WLB, new domain. Should I switch to PM and try a hand at it?
Am I aware of the reality or living in my own isolated reality?

Why PM tho?

Actually why only PM? Do you think you will get zeal after a 70lakh MBA and a non tech role after that?

PM because I m looking at options other than tech, and I see the visibility a PM gets than an IC in tech. Also, I believe not coming from a tech background can help with mba admission process in terms of diversity. Tech male Indian are overrepresented.
So it's a mixture of a lot of reasons, and at EOD, I am confused. So thought I will reach out and talk to people who hv done it.

If you are doing this just for tc increase then don't. You can have plenty of hikes as an IC as your tc is already low. Why don't you try other dev roles like frontend, ml etc?

Tried frontend for a short period. My team accomodated it. But I felt more comfortable and happy with backend, and later got back to it.
ML - yet to try. Thinking I should a data science course but procrastinating.
Meanwhile, noticed the visibility the PM gets in a team compared to an IC and mind started wandering if I should try that
This is because I believe visibility is really important in corporate. I got a good hike and rating since I made it a point to ensure people know my work.
Pls do correct me if I m wrong anywhere

Look for sde roles in some team with chill culture.

The current place I m in, got a chill culture. I hv no complaints with it.
Just an internal turmoil as I find it hard to be interested in tech with every passing day. So wanna explore, but dont wanna undergo a pay drop. (With that pay, I am leading a comfortable life. That's why)

if you like collaboration and program management then PMing is better, you’ll need to show up and work everyday.
If you like IC work continue the swe path.

nope....first talk to people who gives both good and bad sides of pm. Consider urself at that position and gauge whether u will be happy in those shoes or not.

Stick to sde there is huge delta in salaries down the road
