Switching from Law to an MBA in Consulting/Finance: Would this be a right move at this stage?

Hey everyone,

I’m a 26-year-old advocate with six months of experience in criminal and civil litigation. Here’s my background:

Academics: 9 CGPA in 10th, 70% in 12th, and 60% in LLB from Delhi University (DU) – max scores here usually cap around 68%.

Experience: No corporate exposure yet, mostly criminal litigation with senior advocates, though I’m open to pivoting to fields like tax law.

Certifications: I could add a CFA or similar credential if it’d help my profile.

Concerns

  1. Non-NLU Degree: Will DU’s LLB be undervalued in the MBA world?

  2. Lack of Corporate Experience: Would certifications like CFA & i could add some experience with tax attorneys would this help make up for this gap?

  3. Feasibility of Transition: Realistically, is consulting/finance achievable with my background?

Any insights, tips, or advice would be much appreciated!

If money is the motivation, try Corporate, M&A or employment law and then transit to industry. I know lawyers who have taken this route and earning close to 50 LPA with 5-7 YOE.

But won't MBA be a catalyst to my situation? Also do you think my profile would not work in my favour?

MBA is not a sureshot to finance especially in the current market and finance is broad term - accounting, audit, banking, deals, equity research, FP&A , taxation.etc. where do you want to go? That's the most important part you need to explore. Taxation which you are interested in doesn't require a finance degree, a good experience with a Tax law firm is sufficient. Taxation is more of a CA dominated field.

Also, MBA needs to be Top Tier Colleges which means you will get admission somewhere in the age of 27 where most of your peers will be 5 years or more younger to you.

Hey I am not sure how will mba help you. Getting entry will be easier as I don’t think many law grads apply for mba. So you will get full points for diversity.
You can get into tier 2/3 consulting company or ops roles. Basically law roles don’t come to MBA colleges.
