Threads Initial Thoughts

Amazing UX, thoughtfully crafted UI...much better than Twitter.

Overall from a product standpoint, I like the ecosystem angle that Meta is creating for the social media space (like how Apple built its ecosystem).

If the content is unlike Instagram now, I think it's a great strategic move by Zuck, especially when there's so much restructuring going on at Twitter.

What are your initial thoughts?

Can't use the app since it requires an Instagram account πŸ’πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

It's interesting that people looking for a twitter alternative aren't moving to mastadon.

What's the point of moving from a centralised service to another centralised service? Especially if they have the same drawbacks..

Worst part is that threads plans to integrate ActivityPub, which is the protocol that mastadon runs on. If people are going to be on the fediverse, why not just use an open-source and decentralized application, instead of the privacy nightmare that threads is.

The only reason is the user base, unless your friends or the public account switch to Mastodon it will not be in mainstream social media.

Oh definitely.

They'll always have the critical mass advantage, since it's Facebook. They'll probably spend more in marketing than Mastadon has users lol. Plus it's linked to Instagram, so on-boarding is easy.

I guess my gripe is with the fact that there are lots of tech oriented people here on Grapevine, and see multiple posts comparing Twitter and Threads, but barely any mention of Mastadon.

If we don't become the first movers and try and create the critical mass, who will? And we're already familiar with the privacy shenanigans that Facebook pulls. Why do we still want to provide them our data? Especially when there's nothing to lose, since Threads is linking to the Fediverse, and we can probably see all the posts and comments on there through any federated Mastadon instance itself.

No search option.... Major drawback

Threads, for now, only has user search. But I'm pretty sure that it'll move to the search being able to skim through content, tags, topics etc

It imports same data as Instagram. I don't want another Instagram because of the content there.

Opened the home feed and already had to block a dozen people. I don’t mind if I just see 5 posts on my feed if it means it is from people I chose to follow on instagram. I personally am put off by the one available homefeed which seems to gather noise from random accounts.
