My experience with used laptops has not been good. Generally these gadgets perform the best for first 5 years and it's downhill from there. Would recommend investing in a new MacBook during sale season, or else go with student discounts if you need it right away

If you are looking at a low cost scenario at this stage, why even buy? Just try and rent it out. Websites like Rentomojo, Furlenco etc help you with the normal day-to-day stuff (like computers, furniture, mobiles, bikes etc). Also, there are many small companies who rent out used laptops and desktops. Having said all of this, renting is supposed to be a short term solution only. It turns out to be expensive in the long term, so do this with a plan to use the rented assets to generate cash flow which in the future can be saved and used to permanently buy your own assets.
