Transitioning to PM

I have 2.5 years of experience working as AI Engineer across 3 product based startups. Have worked on 3 distinct products/features. Interested in role of a PM, and considering to switch. Is it a good time to switch? Will be joining a cohort, reading a few books, case studies, network to learn about PM and interview prep. My current CTC is 14.5LPA, will I have to take a pay cut if I start as PM? How difficult will the transition be?

IMO you should try to transition internally into the PM role. This will give you a good inclination to be more productive on the Product and also it might not hit the salary.

Of course, you might need to discuss it with your current manager and the Product lead but express your interest.

Just start looking out for roles but don't be in a hurry to switch.

The market has good but reduced number of roles right now.

Don't take it too hard if you don't immediately find what you are looking for.

Thanks. Also while switching, the HR will take my current salary into account and give a hike whatever they feel like, or my current salary would be irrelevant as it’s a completely different role?

Here's what you should do:

  1. Take a udemy course on product management. There are few good ones available during sale (as low as INR 389). This is to understand the cliches and terminology use by PMs
  2. Learn JIRA and Scrum/Sprint planning
  3. Download some templates for user story creation as being a product manager you will always share product features by writing a user story
  4. Understand UI/UX and look at various apps to get an idea of how features are best developed
  5. There is no need to compromise of CTC as role of PM is a progression from being an engineering lead/manager so all your knowledge in your current role is relevant

I have been a Project manager, Engineering head and also product owner and all the above is from my active experience.
