which path? Startup or MNC?
Hola π fellow grapeviners, so in short, I currently work in an early stage startup and I really love the work. Recently, I have a dilemma that should I stay in the startup ecosystem or to go to big tech giants. Obviously π, In mncs the work wonβt be rewarded as much as the startups, but i will get good money and wlb. Can anyone show some insight to me?
I cannot tell for almost everyone, but this is a general formula I thought will be better for myself.
First 6-8 years => Startup
Because that is where we get a lot of exposure and learning, as doing it and taking to scale will teach a lot. You will not get that same learning in short amount of time in MNCs because you'll be part of a small section in a project there. Your growth in startups will be horizontal.
Second stretch of 5-10 years => MNC
Because this is the time for you to become a specialist. MNCs allow you exactly that. Since you will be working on a small area in a big project, your growth will be vertical. Try to become an expert in the domain.
Final stretch of 5-10 years => 3 tracks to take depending on interest
a. Becoming a consultant b. Start your own startup c. Leadership role in Service Sector
Becoming a consultant will allow you to work on your own terms, and by that time money most likely will not a constraint for you. You chase effectiveness of your work.
Starting your own startup will allow you to solve some problem for the society that you wanted to for a long time. You'll be doing what you love to do.
Leadership role in Service Sector will help you with peace that you seek at the end of your career. Nothing much to chase.
Startups (especially unicorns) pay good money as well. Infact they pay better than almost all MNCs.
How do you know that MNCs won't reward you with work especially if you have not worked there. Does your CEO talk such things?
MNC if you are among 85% job seeker
Startups vs Big Tech
What is your take on Software engineering learning in a startup than in a Big tech ? Like how does it impact one's career growth ?
P.S. Please consider Zomato etc. to be big tech and not startups. Thank you
