Haven't we known this for the last 5 years? Are googlers crying now because their free lunch is over? That a decade of chest thumping the word "AI" has led them to lose to Openai and a bunch of startups? I didn't see no one crying back when all the moonshots were failing left and right a few years back

This is universal, not limited to Google. Every business or service, government or private - big or small undergoes revolutionary change in 30 years. reliance made big money in textile industry. Tata's first business was steel. Tata motors (telco at that time) was started to build truxk s to move their raw material and finished products. Big companies dont die they morph. Google might have not made a revolutionary product in the recent times. But they just need 1. They have the money to wait for it.

30 years is a long time. Nothing will remain the same. Except maybe the consulting firms, which thrive on change and chaos.

Google will lose its charm but ain't gonna close very soon. Until and unless, firm like Microsoft or Meta launch some revolutionary product which can replace all Google products efficiently like mail, cloud, search engine and YouTube. 80% revenue comes from ads mainly from Google network and YT. So, replacing Google needs a madman or major geopolitical tussle where alphabet loses out all market except USA.

When companies fail to innovate and keep pace with ever-evolving technology, they risk becoming irrelevant. This applies not only to Google but to any company. I believe Google was initially hesitant in the AI realm, assuming people would stick to their search habits and overlooking OpenAI. However, there was a significant shift with OpenAI, as people transitioned from seeking search results to obtaining direct answers. Witnessing this change, Google responded by adopting a similar approach. A significant issue for Google seems to be a lack of a futuristic strategic vision. It appears they are uncertain about their direction, evident in struggles with their hardware business (Pixel and Chromebook) and losing ground in social platforms (Orkut, Hangout, Plus) to competitors like Microsoft and Meta. Their current battle to keep up with OpenAI indicates a need for strategic clarity. Moreover, their heavy reliance on advertising revenue poses a considerable risk. In my view, Google's survival might be challenging if they fail to stay relevant. However, I believe Alphabet, Google's parent company, holds more potential for survival.

The best way to tackle Alphabet would be to make differential voting shares illegal and in no time puppet CEO Sundar will be booted out.

Microsoft under Steve calmer was also in crisis but they bounced back

No company stays in the same form for 30 years anyway man. These times of some vulnerability make the pessimists seem smart, and a good herd of doomsday callers, like OP here, join the noise. I don't buy it though. Yes, this is likely the most fragile Google has been in the last decade, but they are still racking up incredible ad revenues, own 99%+ search market share, and are likely going to be pushed to adapt and mitigate the risks from openai, microsoft over the next year, with good time and resources on their hands. Gmail, YouTube, Maps, Android, and Search. They are still a monopoly on some top softwares the entire world uses. Good luck betting against that only because a few tech bros have switched to other platforms. IMO, 30 years is too long a time frame, but expect Google to adapt well and keep up.

My hot take: Google will last longer than Apple and Microsoft.

GE seems to be a company for those who want to retire and dont want to interview more. Have just joined as a intern and can see most of the employee above 35-40 age group

A lot of mediocre engineers are there now. They conduct mediocre interviews and reject deserving candidates. (I have had so many weird interviews with them where I solved the problems but the feedback was so nasty or weird.) Their products are all quite bad - Meet, Maps, Pay. It was just search that was keeping them afloat but nowadays ChatGpT and Perplexity is challenging them. I don’t think it’s much of a hot take. Organisations crumble with mediocre people with a superiority complex.
