Couple years into job, and have meetings or discussions almost all day. How in the world do you senior folks get work done?!

Hey everyone, happy to answer any questions around Data Science/ML/AI and making a career within it A brief about me, I work currently as a Sr. ML Engineer at an Indian unicorn startup I graduated 5+ years ago and have since worked as a Data Scientist / ML Engineer at an ecommerce company and social media company. My designations have changed based on the industry requirements and work too changed based on that. Would love to take questions on what it means to be an ML Engineer, my early learnings from a career in data science, and thoughts on AI. Look forward to all questions :)

I’m currently working for a big bank for a little bit over a year and I want to switch departments internally but finding it relatively difficult. I am currently working in the frauds department and I intend to switch into a risk/controls/strategy role but do not know what exactly do I need to do for that. Any folks who maybe made a switch into these departments from a different one would be kind enough to guide a lost soul like me? Your suggestions would really be appreciated.

I am one of the top people pay wise in my team but I don’t want to put in crazy work hours… like I earlier wanted to when I was in my 20s. Am I wrong?

How do you guys approach to completing your tasks which are adjusted to be completed in 40 hours (or whatever amount of time is standard in your company) when 25% of the time goes in meetings and calls only?

So I come from a very traditional company to a startup and when I’m in a meeting with seniors and directors, a lot of what they’re talking about goes right over my head. I have a hard time just keeping up with the pace that they’re going. Lots of it involves domain knowledge but some of them have only been hired a couple months earlier than me and the gap is just ridiculous. Is this normal or am I fucked

It's been almost two years since I have been working for a startup and I report to a founder. The work has been quite remote and the teams collaborate remotely. How often should I have one to one sessions with my manager? The last time we had a one to one was during my appraisal which happened a year ago post which we never met 1:1. However, we meet once a week on a group staff meetings which is driven on a specific business agenda? Is this something healthy?

Last two months had been great, I was consistently building a morning routine. Included little fitness too. Happy how my body felt energetic. Until one day, "I didn’t feel like getting up" Two weeks, Schedule is back to groggy mornings, skipped breakfast, put on visible fat Work has got shittier. My day starts with 2 hours of compulsory, back-to-back meetings, followed by more 1-O-1s through the day. The meetings are just crying how things are bad, not working out, employees are not putting efforts, revenue is down, sales is not performing, clients are leaving - 3 hours later, we still haven't got a action plan. What's the use? This wasn’t meant to be a rant. Just that cannot tell people to fuck off. I feel should tell a part of me to fuck off too.

I feel a lot of insecurity about what if I lost my job. I work in Analytics & data science in a well known Indian Bank. Overall WOE is 8 yrs with 6 yrs in Analytics Tier 1 Engg+MBA. I would say after MBA i lost my way and hence behind my peers in career growth. This is mostly due to unsatisfactory work in the beginning leading to switches based on emotions and impulse, not patience. Though my current job is stable and its been about 2.5 years in this role, it’s a bit stressful and honestly I don’t like the constant firefighting mode that we are in. I constantly put in 10-11 hrs on a daily basis with occasional work on weekends. This includes almost 3 hrs of meetings everyday, where a lot of redundant work requests come in and almost everytime they have to be delivered in next 1-2 days. Quality of work is not so great. I tried applying but not getting decent calls. Only startups and Indian cos with high turnover reply to my applications. They too aren’t ready to discuss a decent hike. I am really insecure about what will happen if I quit / laid off. I have gone through layoffs earlier in my career and believe me it’s a terrible experience, eats up all your savings. I tI tried a few sidegigs to build passive income source such as building a YouTube channel on travel, or a travel advisory app but couldn’t move much. App didn’t happen and YT channel didn’t get off after few months of hard work. I currently am very demotivated and feel that i have not been able to grow in my career. Salary posts on grapevine add a lot more to my demotivation. Current CTC is 27.
