Mid-career crisis!
Goin through a mid-career crisis atm. Overall exp 18 yrs in a mnc bank drawing close to 60 laks CTC. But the growth is stymied and don’t hv visibility of what’s the Development path and how can I get there. Mulling to take a break and prioritise but have some leverage to manage and kids savings. Wife is working atm but draws significantly lower than me so will have lifestyle challenges if I quit. Open to hear suggestions from folks if you’ve had similar experiences and how you managed it?
I'm currently going through an elective year long break. There was no trigger - just thought I'd step aside for a while.
Its a good time to recharge and refresh - dabble with new ideas - train yourself for something new - speak with different folks - catch up with long lost friends - spend time with parents - shitpost on grapevine - you get the picture.
You of course need to be sorted financially to afford a break. If you have visibility of how long you can sustain your lifestyle and liabilities without wrecking havoc on your investment journey - strongly recommend a break.
Have some sketch of what you'd do with your time. It could be anything - you could take French classes, but don't not plan for being on idle for long. You shouldn't hit a wall in 15 days not knowing what you'd be doing in the break and then questioning the decision.
If you can't afford it then don't take a break... You're prolly around 40 so new jobs are difficult to come by... So the break might become permanent.... Go the other way.... Try to find a freelancing gig or offer to do some free work for a startup in your area of expertise.... It will give some perspective and help with motivation
I am reading/assuming you spent all those 18 years at a single company and that might be a reason. Just wanna check if you explored any opportunities outside?

17 Years, and wanted more free time, so switched from a full time role to a couple of part time roles. Far more fulfilling (zero politics!!!!), focus on delivering good work. I draw a bit less than what I used to (about 10-20% less), but I have atleast 2 days a week free to focus on other things (and my kid). Although my wife has been drawing far more than me (so that kind of sorts out any financial issues). Lemme know if you want to chat anytime. I can see myself doing this for the next 10 years, and even managing to grow a bit profitable

Join a fintech startup as head of ops/sales etc
Don't quit your job before you have other
Be very clear on -
Why you want to take a break ( can you not achieve what you want while in job)
How you plan to rejoin
Back up plan
Not a good time to take a break. I know senior people who took breaks and are struggling to get hired now. The more senior you are, the tougher it will be.

Dont quit your job unless you have other.
HRs wont touch your CV if they see a break of more than a year. Indian corporates are bitches
