Folks with 10+ yoe, What are some industry secrets that you can share?
as the title says
Still some time to reach the decade mark...but have had some pretty pathetic bosses sho ended up giving me a lifetime of experience. I can share somethings i learnt...you decide if it's useful or not -
1. Always be in control of your emotions and say something only after considering who you're talking to and what ramifications it may have.
2. Trust yourself to do the right thing for you. No boss is there to think and put in a good word for you...unless he/she also gains something from it
3. Learn to say NO in a way that doesn't sound like a NO.
4. Decide what you want out of a job and track it...if it's not working GTFO there's plenty of good roles out there dont wait for things to change at work.
5. Be pretty Frank in the Appraisal Talks...if you can make the manager uncomfortable chances are you wouldn't be put under the bus if they need a scapegoat
Will add more when I recollect it

Could you explain your 5 th point? Normally won't the manager put under the bus the people who he doesn't like ?
5th is what I faced. 8+ yoe. After my 8th year the AMAZING MANAGER made me her scapegoat for the fault of hers. She didn't want to lose the job. So she wanted me to be her excuse so I would be forced out of the company. But I let myself out. What's the use of 8 years if I can't do that
After first 2 years, you are on your own. Take care of yourself. Take charge of your career. Where you end up is pretty much on yourself. Don't expect managers to do it for you.
