Friends

I have been on a permanent wfh role since covid. Yes, been 2+ years since I stepped into an office. I stay alone and have little expenses but also 0 social life. Friends are all spread out. Not on any dating app because its exhausting. Can someone just talk about any impacts on their personal life from work life? Does anyone here feel a void too? I’d love to connect.

So today I gave my final exam of my engineering and within a blink the journey of 4 amazing years came to an end. It feels like it was just yesterday when I took admission in college. Now I am doing an wfh internship and I am feeling like I will be lonely, since I don't have any friends apart from college (which I am pretty sure there are less chances of meeting as I had lot of friend but I was close to none🙂). Earlier I used to go to college and I was kinda a known personality, but now as it is ended so no more going to college and thought of working from home all day is making me anxious and depressed. So want advice from you guys about what should I do, how did you tackled this phase? I know I might sound cringe and sorry for that, but I am writing this just for help and advice.

Graduated in 2021, got an okayish job, still doing well career wise. I tried my own startups too. But I've never got the feeling of "yehi karna hai yaar life mein". All the friends are now disconnected. Doing WFH since forever and don't even have good connections at my current org or in my previous org. Tried therapy as well, didn't help much, they recommended medications, but that I'm not willing to do as of now. I don't know whether it's just me or this gruelling feeling of existential dread will ever go away. Maybe software engineering as a domain is like that, encourages introverts and introvertedness. But idk something is not right. No friends, no space to vent out frustrations. And it's been about 3 years since I last had a conversation with the opposite gender. I'm in complete mental mess, only thing keeping me alive is probably gym. I just want something to cling on to, to know this is not the end and this is not how it will end.

Hi guys, I just graduated and started working. My office doesn't really have an in-office work culture, so I usually go to the office once in a while. The rest of the days I work from home. I live at home, and I agree that staying with your family brings in a lot of comfort. But the place where I live is a small town. I don't have friends here, and my social life has become almost zero. I feel like I have no one to talk to, my college friends on the other hand have moved to metro cities for their jobs, living with their friends. I see them enjoying every weekend which makes me feel bad as I don't have any friends here. Even my college friends have stopped talking to me. At times, I feel very lonely and sad. I have also been seeing a therapist for a while now. Could someone please help me with any advice/suggestions. I'm in dire need of advice/ perspective and have no one to talk to.

I am 23M working in a well renowned Fintech startup. Have got what I have dreamed of in college like high ownership, good pay and other similar things. But lately realized that I can't do these things for my majority of life. Although I enjoy my work but still feeling lonely and aimless. Previous to September it was remote but now they have made it hybrid and I have to reallocate to Gurgaon and now I am feeling more lonely and aimless in life. Have tried travelling and other stuffs inorder to find interest in life but nothing excites me.

Most of us on Grapevine, working in corporate sector might make decent chunk of money if we keep grinding for a decade or two but very few of us would have the social capital (or as they say “networking” in our corporate jargon). Increasingly realising that the society respects the business owners or govt officers more than any senior leader in an IT firm. There is no social recognition for corporate folks. It might not be relevant for young folks as they still have some residual social recognition of the family for now, but what would happen after a decade or two. Most of the corporate “friends” are no longer in touch except for very rare ones. How does one build a social circle after 10-20 yrs in corporate? Would like to hear from folks above 40 yrs if they’ve had similar thoughts and how are they managing? Also, What are some ways one can start building social circle overtime while doing a corporate job? PS: I am referring social capital as having a certain level of stature in society alongwith deep connections with some people living around you who can help you in need or can expect something from you. This is different from LinkedIn networking where primary expectation is referrals.

Holi hai? Diwali hai? So what, nothing to enjoy. Lets spend the day laying on the bed, watching stuff over phone. Feeling less and less disconnected with friends, to the point where I feel I don't even have friends. College friends are based in another city. Didn't even try to make friends at workplace. Stuck alone in my homecity as past 6 years I was based somewhere else completing my grad and preparing for jee. Prior to that focused a lot on studies. So had little to no interaction with people during academics. And now when I have time and money to spend, there is noone with whom I can have fun with.

Currently working in a startup and contributing in data science projects. Learning is good but a lot of time goes down in meetings and discussions and I have to do late night work. Everyday starts to feel like the same and I am not able to get time for extra learning to enhance my knowledge and tech stack. Also thinking of company change but most of them need 3-4 years exp to the data science team. 😭
