Views on using AI for projects.

To all the devs (working professionals and students), how much do you rely on ChatGPT for your code? Do you explicitly use it to generate code logic, or only use it for debugging? Plus, do you think that the newer generation of students might miss out on the essence of programming with the advent of ChatGPT?

I will let GPT do the talking: Using ChatGPT as a student can be detrimental to your career in the long run. While AI tools like ChatGPT offer convenience and quick access to information, overreliance on them can hinder the development of critical skills. Key skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity are nurtured through active engagement with learning materials and hands-on practice. If students rely too heavily on AI to generate answers or complete assignments, they miss out on the cognitive processes that are essential for deep understanding and knowledge retention. Moreover, employers value originality and the ability to generate unique insights. Dependence on ChatGPT for ideas and solutions can lead to a homogenization of thought and a lack of originality, making individuals less competitive in the job market. The ability to analyze information, form independent opinions, and articulate thoughts clearly is crucial in professional settings, and these skills are best developed through personal effort and practice. Additionally, ethical considerations come into play. Using AI to complete tasks meant to assess one's understanding and capabilities can be seen as academic dishonesty, leading to a compromised reputation and potential disciplinary actions. In the long term, this can damage one's credibility and career prospects. In summary, while ChatGPT can be a helpful tool, relying on it excessively as a student can undermine the development of essential skills, originality, and ethical standards, ultimately hurting one's career.

The lack of critical thinking these days is driving me nuts. I've got a few people on my team who've somehow BS'd their way into roles they can't handle. They can't do anything that takes more than a minute of actual thought. It's like all I get is copy-pasted ChatGPT output for the simplest questions. Makes me seriously worried about how they will get better over time (as a lot of us did). We're churning out folks who can't think for themselves, and it's scary as hell.

They are suggesting that I buy all ai bullshit premiums.

Do you think Chat GPT slash AI will be a disruption to human workforce ? If yes, then why and in how many years do you see that happening. If no, then why not?

Hey everyone, happy to answer any questions around Data Science/ML/AI and making a career within it A brief about me, I work currently as a Sr. ML Engineer at an Indian unicorn startup I graduated 5+ years ago and have since worked as a Data Scientist / ML Engineer at an ecommerce company and social media company. My designations have changed based on the industry requirements and work too changed based on that. It shows a lot of possibilities for sure. But do you see its capabilities causing negative outcomes?

I know that understanding the fundamentals and basics are absolutely necessary for coding. But still do companies allow Data Science employees to code using ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, etc.? Atleast taking help for the base code and troubleshooting code mistakes, then modifying it to suit the project needs?

I work at a fintech company.. We have a engineering team of 35 dev which includes around 10 senior devs and the remaining are interns and junior devs.. we got called for a productivity improvement meeting by one of the senior developer and he just denied chatgpt for us.. Okay I’am biased here.. I agree we need to embrace new technologies.. But his point was to use chatgpt promts to write all of our code and it makes no sense.. He demoed chatgpt promts and was like “ see you don’t need to write a single line of code “ When we told we should not solely depend on tools such as copilot or chatgpt as it will not help us as well as the interns and the junior devs.. You code to learn .. you don’t learn to code .. Just by copy pasting code snippets for chatgpt will take them nowhere and I’m pretty sure it will confuse them even more .. What do you guys feel ?
