Had a chat with a senior PM today on the need of the PM function with Ai getting smarter. Engineers build, designers design, data people analyse things, and a business person has the mind to make money by leveraging the team. When a point arrives where Ai does all the IC part of Engineering, Design and Data, there won't be a requirement of PM function at all! Creativity, Empathy, Product thinking, all these skills will be owned by Engineers, Designers, Data and Business leaders. These skills like "product sense" are something that won't hold the fort much longer because eventually all good engineers, designers and data people will have to develop the customer empathy and product sense to prompt the Ai and do their individual job better. IMHO it is a high time that all PMs work to strengthen at least one hard skill to keep themselves employable. While I am writing this post, unfortunately I am also the one who is seeking a PM role right now. Any suggestions or thoughts you have on which hard skill to master and how to remain employable?

The AI Engineer, is the next new thing according to what I am hearing from top Leaders. One is involved in working with AI APIs and open-source models to productise AI capabilities. AI tasks that can now be accomplished with ease, thanks to the availability of foundation models and APIs. It also touches on the challenges in evaluating, applying, and productizing AI. AI Engineer is the new role to get. The title is on the rise. I have been interviewing and a lot of companies seem to hire AI Engineers compared to ML Engineers now. OpenAI has changed the game since models and APIs has significantly reduced the time and resources required to accomplish AI tasks, making it easier for AIx to work with these technologies. This is the greatest thing ever in the history of mankind. We had room sized computers in 1960s that could only compute simple calculations. Now you have a more powerful computer in your microwave. Now imagine, the day you can run GPT4 on your smartphone. The compute will get their with miniaturization of compute or offloading to cloud. We need more AI Engineers, please reach out to me in DMs please. Even after so many layoffs, low salary of engineers , the craze of engineering is not going down. Every year 10lack students are writing jee , even if half of them will do engineering somehow then where will they get jobs ? It is just increasing the saturation of the market, which eventually decreases salaries, And now this AI God knows when it will come to an end 😮‍💨

How important it is to upgrade technical skills for a mid level engineers with 5-8 yoe keeping in mind the AI is on rise. 3 options: 1. It’s important to include AI in your skills. 2. No, it won’t impact that much and will fade with time. 3. Better to start slowly with AI and have secondary skills.

Consultant, Investment Banking went from sought after careers to fads post 2008 crisis when the world realized that these folks are crooks due to their role in propogating the Great Financial Crisis. Given the backlash tech companies has been getting and global layoffs, will Product Manager also become a passing fad?
