Hi, being at a mid senior position, I’ve been torn at what should my next move look like? 
What I’ve realised is Product Management is domain and role influenced. Currently I’m generic and own an entire platform hence I know a little bit of everything. Data, tech, AI, you get the picture. 

I’m starting to wonder where do I go next? Should I delve deeper into maybe Data or AI or technology so that I can become a data PM? Or a tech PM? 
Or should I keep growing horizontally? But that feels so crowded and I feel comes with a glass ceiling.

Hey folks,
I'm wondering what kinda role I should pursue next after product management. 
I'm done with this role, works vary from company to company and team to team. It's tough to make people understand the difference between pre-PMF products & mature products, and how the metrics impact vary across the spectrum. 
And this completely changes the equation of your appraisal or your promotion as well. 
I don't see myself working in the same kind of role after 5 years.
So I'm wondering what kinda role I should look out for?
My general interests are more analytics & strategy centric. What do you guys think??

I am a 3rd year student from tier -3 private college, pursuing btech  is it possible to get PM roles just after under graduation, have seen people from tier -1/2 pursuing vague branches like coal mineral sort of engineering and still be able to crack roles as a PM at tech companies . I'm a senior consultant(mix of business analyst and consultant) at a mid size organization with 3 YOE, 16 LPA from tier 1 college. 

From my understanding I'm entering a stage where i can still pivot to product management, as later on it will be pretty hard!

So my question to you all is that is it worth it to change career or should i climb ladder in consultancy.

I don't really have any passion, my main focus points are money and job security. 

What do you think i should do?, what pays more?, which field has more future opportunities?

I'm in serious trouble.
I was an sde for 3+ years. Didn't like it, thought it's not meant for me and wanted a different job. 
Came across Product management, which piqued my interest. Somehow found a contract job at a startup and did it for a year. While it's not a traditional PM, it was more of a project manager.

The contract ended, now I'm unemployed.

Applied for jobs, no luck. Now I'm questioning my career choices, should I stick with PM or should I go back to being a techie. I definitely don't want to go back to coding, but I'm thinking of doing something like IAM/okta/cyberark stuff. 

Experienced folks, please help. I literally don't know where am I headed in life

I've been working as a Senior Analyst at a startup for 4+ years, and I've always wanted to become a Product Manager to make a big difference. So, I've started getting ready for it.

- I've noticed a concerning trend among PMs, both through personal observation and online discussions, where they tend to overlook data integrity, opting instead to manipulate it to portray success.


- I firmly believe that Product Managers play a pivotal role in taking calculated risks, fostering innovation, and ultimately ensuring the success of their products.


- Despite being well-compensated in my current position, my drive to optimize the top of the funnel compels me to pursue a career shift into Product Management.


- I firmly believe that power within a company comes with a corresponding responsibility.


- It's evident that many PMs are fighting with dissatisfaction, often experiencing high levels of stress and unhappiness. I'm keen to understand the root causes of this discontent and how professionals in this field are managing such challenges.


- Despite being inherently talented individuals, why does Product Management seem to come with such a significant stress burden?

What questions are asked for a product mgmt interview? How can one become a PM without tech background? 
I have product strategy background.
In interviews i am able to ace product sense / product strategy questions but when it comes to tech, unable to show the required tech acumen (due to lack of actual exposure to it).

Should I just stay put in product / business strategy roles or move into product mgmt?

Reasons for moving into PM - want career and monetary growth, build tech stuff and not just strategise stuff. Have 6 yrs experience (2 yrs pre MBA data analytics+ 2 yrs business strategy + 2 yrs product strategy).

Sharing some reflections on this:

1. Product is not a function with a large hierarchy / multiple levels in the ladder. Managerial responsibility comes in very late in the product career and the spans are typically small (relative to other functions like engineering, sales, operations). This also means a steeper funnel to the top and only a handful VP Product roles in the industry.

2. Product is centered around technology and digital consumer trends, both of which are fast changing. This requires constant unlearning and relearning. But more critically, this also means that previous knowledge/experience hits a plateau on marginal value beyond a basic threshold (where you have developed some essential product semse and skills).

3. Product managers are also much higher-paid vs other functional peers, at comparable years of experience. This means that a PM gets to a very high salary (say, 1+ crore) by the age of 40 (15-20y into their career). Tech functions in non-tech companies (like FMCG, banking) cannot offer that kind of pay, meaning salary growth beyond a point is limited to tech-first companies / limiting addressable market for lateral moves.

All of these considererd, how should PMs think about the longevity of their careers? Unlike traditional roles, this does not seem like a "retire at 60" job. What would be the realistic age one should plan for, at which career growth and salary growth will stagnate? What are ways in which a 80%ile PM can extend their career (eg: also taking up engineering management or P&L responsibility or growth function etc., to increase scope)?

PS: this post is not for the top 5-10% PMs. They will always find roles at VP level etc, this is for the 50-90%ile bucket of PM talent.

Longevity of a product career

Will commend you on a very well written and well articulated post. 
  
 Options for the future will be apparent at ~40.  Most peak roles will be achieved between 45-50. 
  
 Possible exits: 
  
 1. Running Category roles at companies which have a broad canvas, multiple product categories. 
 2. Deputing for and eventually running a P&L or a LoB. 
 3. Sales or more critically Customer Success.  Don't shy away from revenue responsibilities. 
  
 Engineering is a sharp left turn imo.  It's not an overlapping skillset at best and don't see how that is part of a PMs likely roadmap.

I'm working as a technical product manager who has transitioned from analytics/data science role with over 5+ yoe and 2yoe as PM. I am earning in the range of 35-55LPA right now. While I am happy with the salary, I am not content with the role I have performed as PM so far. When I go for textbookish PM tasks and roles, I feel I don't do so much in my daily routine. Because of the nature of companies I worked in I didn't get a lot of hands on exposure into UX and the growth side of the job.

I don't have a lot of confidence with many areas of product management and feel like at this stage for me to grow needs a significant skill and confidence boost. To do the same I'm looking for courses/degrees. I'm hoping to get more better opportunities if I have certification in my portfolio.

What are your thoughts on the topic? Also, if you could suggest whether Hero vired certification in product management partnered with INSEAD will be a good choice? I will really appreciate objective feedback / frameworks that will help me with making the decision.

I work at a B2B SaaS company (been 2 years now) as a PM. From the last 12 months, my work has mostly revolved around strategy, business intelligence, program/general mgmt. I am now planning to quit and move on. However, I am not sure if I want to continue being a PM, because it's very overwhelming honestly and I actually enjoyed the last 12 months as a generalist. 

Need career advice whether to pursue program mgmt/strategy/general mgmt/Chief of staff/new initiatives roles or devote my time to prepare for PM interviews and also try to make up for the last 12 months.

Some pointers about me:

1. I have a CS degree from a tier II college but haven't coded in a while.
2. There is no particular reason to quit. The job is chill & remote. 
3. The head office is in the US. There is a possibility of moving to the US as well in the next 1 year.
4. The pay is fine. Not the best out there but decent

I have overall 4 YOE in software engineering space now and have been considering long term view of my career and what my future would look like.

Is MBA a better choice for long term growth and trajectory, I have been working primary in frontend software engineering space and still find it exciting and challenging due to new changes and updates coming everyday.

But is product management better for the long term, what is the career graph for frontend engineers after maybe 10-12 YOE ?

Also how does AI impact both roles in the long term ? Any past software engineers turned PMs what are your thoughts?
