Yes, switched from BE to DE role 2 years ago. Growth is good but it also depends on org you choose, now a days orgs hire DE just for sake and work is very minimal. Try to find org where the analytics team is strong and they need your help there and also data flow is good

In terms of future prospects, data as whole will be there for long time and unless Analysts start getting their own data (ETL jobs), DE position is required
