Do you think PM interviews are a good indicator of competence?

Lately I have been giving interviews for APM/PM roles, it seems interviewers are looking more on how well you can solve a guesstimate/product design question than what you have done in the past, has anyone gone through a similar phase? Any resources that can be referred for PM interview prep?

How does someone with 0 background in AI have enough knowledge to clear interview rounds at a company primarily into AI? Also, what kind of skills should I expect to put to use (barring the usual PM skills) to be a great PM in that space? In general, how to become a great AI PM? (I’m a non-engineer who found a break into Product after a year in Sales and shitty MBA from a T3 college)

Does anyone else feel like the PM interview process is easily scammable? I feel like 80% of it is a vibe check and 20% is the actual content itself. Am a PM with 3 YoE and have been interviewing around recently. I have 0 preparation for any interview I walk into and have gotten offers from multiple startups. (Not bragging, I'm a good talker) You need to just break down any questions into understandable parts and explain it well enough. I have been a PM for the last 3 years but my interviewing skills are really bad. I have sat through a bunch of interviews. Read decode and conquer cover to cover, but even then, I've made little progress. I know I'm not bad at the role because I have gotten frequent hikes and created tangible impact on every product I've worked on. The interviews I have cracked are mostly due to luck and my conversion rate is poor. Would love to get some insights from folks who have experienced the same roadblock.

I'm a software engineer with very little knowledge of what pms and strategy people do but whatever the level gpt might achieve in future, it may make coding jobs redundant but I believe product roles would still be `safe`. Thoughts?

Despite hiring being really shitty in general, I've found PM interviews to be quite random, particularly SMB segment, which is kind of expected as well but sometimes the lack of self-awareness and about the candidate is surprising. Some of them want to keep questions deliberately ambiguous and if you ask for clarity they'll judge you as someone who can't handle ambiguity. And the others will judge you if you don't ask the right questions. As someone with experience in PM I can't believe how bookish the hiring managers are sometimes. Everything is a "pain point " , "problem statement " or a " persona " . So pigeonholed in frameworks and data that they've lost the ability to think without those.

It’s clear that companies won’t need engineers 10 years from now. They’ll just need people who know what to make. Who to sell to. How to sell to. At what price. This will be the great commoditization of Software development Take it or leave it.
