My opinion: When hiring at mid to senior levels, HRs want to get credible people. Who knows frameworks and can be scaled further, etc. Unfortunately, there are no easy filters for HRs to shortlist profiles. 
  
 Credibility comes either when you have worked at solid places or when you have educational badges like IIT/ISB.  
  
 In my case, I am a btech from tier 3 college.. worked mostly in very early stage startups. All in took was one person at a unicorn co to bet on me in 2022. Now I get calls from other large cos. Earlier, this was never the case. 
  
 But yes, this is specific to tech/ product careers

In tech it is not at all a limiting factor. If you are in a 'business' role or even in a product role, there will be companies where you might hit a ceiling unless you are an absolute standout performer

What would be better in order to improve salary scale - a) Getting masters in management domain from a good university next year then joining as consultant or b) working for 2 yrs and getting promoted further as consultant ( keeping in mind that my CTC right now is 6LPA only)

I wanted to share my journey and seek advice on a concern I've been facing. After completing my undergraduate studies, I worked for two years before deciding to pursue a Master's in Advanced Computer Science in the UK, focusing on a thesis in Machine Learning as a part of course.

This decision was driven by my passion for the field and a desire to advance my knowledge and skills.However, due to some family issues, I had to return to India after completing my master's. 

Since then, I've been working in one of the MNCs here again on developement with very less package 12.50LPA.My overall IT expereicne was 4+ in IT. Despite my efforts and the advanced degree I hold, I've noticed that my master's qualification hasn't been given much consideration; instead, my career growth seems to be solely based on my experience.

I'm beginning to wonder if my decision to pursue a master's abroad has been more of a hindrance than a help in the Indian job market.

I would appreciate insights from this community on a few points:
-->Is a Master's degree valued differently in India compared to other countries?
-->How can I better leverage my advanced degree to benefit my career here?
-->Have others faced similar challenges, and how did you navigate them?
-->Do we really need to have better network in India to go to big positions?

I’ve noticed a pattern that most folks at leadership have a masters degree at least (mostly mba). Im at that point where leaving my job (20LPA, 5YOE) for 2 years does not make sense and getting into ISBs would demand a strong Gmat score which looks difficult.
Should I take a MS or some other masters degree for the sake of it? Just so that I might be in contention for senior roles years later?

If not MBA, then what?

I understand most of you who have switched is either for financial reasons or maybe change in role or work or even bad boss. 

I am talking about an angle from where your work is good, team is good so is culture. And most importantly you are being respected and have amazing peace of mind, stress free life.Yes salary might be low, but again there never will be a limit where some should stop and not ask for more money.

I am at this point, where pay is decent and genuinely don’t feel to switch. But it’s just that people everywhere are talking about switching, and comparing that this guy earns more than you. People are like you should switch and earn more money etc. 

But haven’t found anyone who feels the same as i do. In good place where I am. What do you think?

Going up the ladder, the competition for promotions must get harder and harder with lesser people on the top. At this stage do you find that having an additional degree helps in terms of hirability? Does MS add any value in in long term career growth/job security?

I don't want to move from India , so I was trying to evaluate if there is meaning to an MS apart from transfer to US and dollar salary...

27M here. I am a Supply Chain Generalist now. I have a keen interest in Operations Research which is a very specialized field which involves applied mathematics to optimise the systems. From my research I have found that recruiters give a great emphasis on Masters degree for such roles

Getting a masters from abroad isn't affordable for me and to get a master's, I will have to slog for the GATE exam. I have graduated like in 2019. Don't recall anything will have to start from scratch will need minimum 2 years of time preparing alongwith job.

There is also another way where I can study the topics from MIT Open edu/coursera/nptel. And work on learning python and R. but it may never be prove my competence as opposed to a Full time masters degree from IITs

What is the best way forward? Since Operations Research is closely associated with Machine Learning as well many of you techies might help me. Do you emphasis on degrees when hiring for such roles?

From someone I met yesterday, they concluded that it might not be dying but it has gotten extremely competitive at entry levels. It might be dying for the extreme noobs probably because these noobs can find better jobs (money/effort) in Product Management or Founder's Office yada yada.

Personally, it’s highly competitive now. I mean it was always easy to get in with a masters degree. Now it is hard to get in even with a PhD.

True, people get hired without masters degrees but only a small fraction of them are doing really great work. Your skills to progress matter more than a piece of paper here.

Hey folks,

Having 3.3 YOE. In one of my past stints I left a company in 2 months due to toxic work culture and joined a better company. 

I am a junior product manager. Will this short stint create problems for further opportunities?

Need suggestions.

I have three younger cousins. They don't want to code. They have their clarity. They don't want to pursue any particular engineering stream as well. 

They want to get a decent paying job. Let's say 6-8 lpa start with a path to 15-20 lpa in 4-5 years. 

I tried advising them to not invest a lot of money and four years of time in engineering. Their family is average middle class financially. I told them that I'll advise you what all to learn like content writing, seo, data analytics etc. So do a simple course, save money and rather invest in something that matters for job. 

They did listen but did not get confidence to act. 
All three went for engineering stream. These are private colleges with tier 3ish names. Now they don't get time to put a lot of time because 8-4 is usually college time. Unlike tier 1,2 college where you get campus and a lot of freedom, the colleges usually have a lot of classes and compulsory 80% type attendance. 

Did you face similar situation? What did you advise? Do you think I was giving them right decision?

Your advice is misleading. You don't become a best in class data analyst if you can't code. SEO is a shady business and there isn't growth. Even a PU graduate can do content writing or SEO. Engineering is like a passport. You use the degree to make your career. The number of people earning 20L with 5 yoe with a non engg degree is pretty low. I empathize with the 8-4 struggle. I have seen such people, but they are still better off by doing engineering than anything else. There are other core engineering career options in non-software industry, but you will have to be competitive to secure a decent job even there. There are banking, insurance etc. Even these require people to be competitive. There is no free lunch. May be in European nations, but these won't last long.

Hi All, I am a Java developer with >5 YOE, currently working in a low code tool.
I see a bunch of my colleagues and friends are pursuing M.B.A which made me feel lagging.
Could you please tell me 
1) if this degree is relevant to me in my current position / generally for a dev. I mean, if I stay as a dev for the next 5 years, will an additional degree in my resume do any good?
2) Seeing BAs in different companies / clients that I worked for, I liked what they do and I might be inclined to take that role in the far future. My understanding is that BAs are still in touch with tech tools or most of them I've seen are, and hence I like this. Are there other similar roles?
3) Will an M.B.A be a deciding factor in roles like engineering manager, engineering director, head of business systems etc?

How can M.B.A help me in my career?

Non-engineering tier 1 grad here. Close to 1 YOE. 

At this point, I'm not sure which career path I want to choose. I see so many MBAs working in the same profile as me and honestly? I would never work in this role if I would've done an MBA 

I know that doing an MBA isn't magical and wouldn't solve all your problems. 

Maybe it makes sense for all those engineering grads who want to change careers or for people who are just looking at buying some time before they grow up.

I know I won't learn anything absolutely new because my undergrad was in a similar field. What it'll offer me is a good network and some pedigree, but at this point I'm not sure if it's worth it, especially for ~30 lakhs of fees.

I just want to hear from people who had a similar background (commerce/non-engineering) and if they had any regrets due to pursuing/not pursuing an MBA.

I was curious, that what will happen to the people who are right now working in growth, program managers, or in fact as business analysts, SDEs after 15 years.

 I am 25 Years old right now, and all I can see is people aged between 21-30 in startups. 30-35 year old people are less than 5% of the workforce. After 10 years, all my age group people will be 35, and all the roles I see at that age, are too scarce. 

Will it be too difficult to switch jobs then, or career, hikes will kinda stagnate there? 

Want to know from other experienced people that where does the crowd go?

What after 15 YOE?

I am close to 15 years ex. So probably i can answer i guess. In my area of work, i see all the less experienced folks not much capable in understanding the whole picture of business for creating roadmaps and strategies , cannot do stakeholder management much and moreover do not understand failsafe situations . That way i feel my job is safe. I can also do the job which my 2 year experience person does and in a better way and can also work like my manager who is probably 20 years experience and lead the teams.  
 As long as one is technically relevant , experience is a boon for orgs.
